Guest guest
Hi Shell, My favourite gadgets are the same as yours - wand blender and bread machine! But I also love my electric rice cooker, which does a beautiful job with brown basmati rice. The gadget I wouldn't buy again is an electric steamer. I had one and the element kept furring up, and the instructions said that to de-fur it you had to fill it with distilled vinegar and boil. It did the trick but it also filled the house with choking vinegar fumes! Guest guest
I managed to get a friend to carry a rice cooker back from Japan... the ones you can get in England are really basic... a simple lid... put rice in .. add water .. switch on... there are some specialist places that do better ones... better meaning a hinged lid that clips down... programmable options... 24 hour timer ... etc... you can also cook soups and other stuff in them... the element in my steamer is still furry ... now you've put me off cleaning it with vinegar... eek... Guest guest
Like the sound of the Japanese rice cooker. Mine is very basic as you say, the worst thing was that instructions were only given for white rice. I had to find out by trial and error what proportions to use for other types of rice. Still I wouldn't be without it. One of the nice things with mine is that it has a steamer tray, so I can steam my green veg over the rice whilst it's cooking. The tray is also exactly the right size to fit into two of my saucepans.
