Guest guest
It's OK and some of us are meeting up in a couple of weeks in London. It's at http://groups.msn.com/VegansUK/ You seem to be listed on it already though, but according to your profile it has your email wrong angieright so maybe you are not getting the email from them because the w is missed out of your name, so maybe you did a typing error when you joined up. Guest guest
Well although I did put the cat among the pigeons on the other list a bit at one time, I am not always arguing, and I am quite friendly and like meeting other veggies and vegans locally, because I really do want a circle of like-minded friends in my area, so if you are anywhere near Harrow, I am always there at the Sakonis on a Friday lunchtime in term-time at noon. Don't get the chance to meet up much at evenings or weekends though because of family commitments (three kids under 10). I only have my youngest with me in the week, so that's the best time for me to meet up with people. Are you quite a new vegan or an oldie like me and Angie? You are right, this group is for vegans to be friendly and supportive, that was why Michael split it into two groups, so don't be afraid to discuss anything about veganism that is on your mind. We won't bite! I think Angie was meaning the way things used to get when it was only one list, but all that is on the Vegansuncensored list now. But yes do check that other group, it is very active these days, and meet-ups are happening in London soon. We do argue or rather debate sometimes but somehow it's not as bad as it used to be on the Vegansuncensored list, and there is also a lot of support on there. Just take part in the bits that interest you! There are other veggie/vegan groups which are very polite and friendly, such as Veggiebrits, not all vegans on there but quite a few are vegan. I'm thinking of UK-based vegan forums or lists, as I want to get to know more vegans. I've considered becoming a Vegan Society regional contact for this area (Worcs/Gloucs/Herefs), where I don't think they have anybody, but have been put off by the need to attend training courses and the expectation that local contacts will deal with the media. As I wouldn't be paid for being a contact, I don't really want such formality or to have to spend time dealing with the media. I'd just want to be a local source of information and, therefore, would just expect to be dealing with questions from local people to a certain extent and, therefore, don't really see what benefit training would have. I'd prefer it to be a more informal thing where the local contacts refer stuff they can't deal with (such as media requests) up to the Contacts Co-ordinator (or whatever he/she is called). No, this list IS what you thought it to be. If people don't respond to you then maybe you didn't say anything worth responding too. Maybe every thought what you said was put so well they had nothing more to add. If there is anything anyone wants to discuss, ask, talk about then say something. Otherwise everyone just sits back waiting for someone else to start and complaining at the silence. Michael

If that happens leave it to me to sort it out. You can bring up any subject you want. People join and leave the list all the time so subjects are bound to cycle and people seem more than happy to discuss the same things ad infinitum anyway. Guest guest
Hello everyone, i had to to the group for a little while because i had some problems but i think they're fixed. I'm still getting emails in the wrong order, ie some are delayed in getting here, so i apologise in advance if i reply to something then see its already been replyed to by someone else. is this normal when receiving individual emails? I normally have digests but decided to go for individuals this time or i never get round to replying. Anyway, i have a couple of questions for you, being new to veganism... 1) Where do you guys shop? I have a tiny, independent and not very good health shop in my area, and a bigger one (beanfreaks) which stocks lots more in town (but i can't get there very often at the moment). I do my main shop for veg etc at ASDA but sainsbury's have an aisle of health foods and their free from range which has no dairy in it, although its expensive. So i am spending far too much time shopping at the moment, going to ASDA, Sainsburys and trying to get to town (which i haven't managed yet). there must be an easier way! - or am i just asking for too much 2) I've bought some vegan cookbooks but alot of the recies call for unusual ingredients that i haven't been able to get yet. I'm already getting bored with what i'm eating. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips about cooking? I'm not asking for recipes, but rather suggestions of the types of thing i could try. Sorry guys, i'm sure you've had these questions before and they may seem a little dumb but i'm starting to struggle a bit. Also, i made some cookies yesterday and they were awful. They had this bitter aftertaste and when my boyfriend tried them he described them as " pure evil! " . Lol I had the same taste when i tried to make a microwave vegan sponge pudding. What am i doing wrong!!! Laura _______________ Stay in touch with MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.co.uk

It's amazing some of the things that are okay. Also, if you can track down a Co-Op in your area they label their own-brand stuff when it's vegan friendly. There's also www.veganstore.co.uk for all sorts of weird stuff, and www.redwoodfoods.co.uk for vegan non-cheese / non-meat products. Personally, most of the weekly shop (for 2 people) arrives in the form of the weekly organic veg. box. Not the best time of year to join a scheme, as we're entering the hungry gap and the choice of veg can get a little limited. It does make it interesting when you have to invent the weeks food based on a random selection of veg though... This does assume that you can eat/enjoy eating whatever veg come your way. > 2) I've bought some vegan cookbooks but alot of the recies > call for unusual ingredients that i haven't been able to get yet. Name the ingredients, and we may be able to offer suggestions as to where you'd find them, or replacements, or other names for things (e.g. Garbanzos = Chick Peas). > I'm already getting bored with what i'm eating. Does anyone have any > suggestions or tips about cooking? I'm not asking for recipes, but rather > suggestions of the types of thing i could try. Pasta, rice, potatoes, pies, stews, casseroles, steamed veg, stir-fries... Apart from non-cheese things and various vegan sausages most of what I cook / we eat is based on veggies. I'd suspect that using TVP-style meaty recipes would get very boring very quickly. Let us know what you're eating, and we can try and suggest variations on the themes to liven it up. There are lots of international veggie cook books - if you like cooking and like food from all around the world, Madhur Jaffery's " World Vegetarian " gives lots of recipes, but not much by way of inspirational pictures. The World Food Cafe cookbook has lots of pictures to tempt you into trying things. The entire Chronicle Books " Vegetarian Table " series make my mouth water. However, these are all *veggie* not vegan cookbooks, so some playing with ingredients is required. One of my favourite cookbooks isn't veggie at all, it's " The Modern Cook's Manual " by Lynda Brown. The good thing is it has nice sections on rice / pasta / potatoes /pulses etc with a good introduction to each and suggestions on ways to cook them. I know it's fairly normal cookbook stuff, but the way it's done works wonderfully for me. Sadly, I only have one inspirational vegan cookbook (The New Vegan Cookbook) and the other vegan cookbooks I have are pretty much bland and functional. However, looking on Amazon, there seem to be quite a few more out there than last time I looked (several years ago probably). The Linda Majzlik " Vegan Taste Of... " series look especially (a) interesting and (b) cheap. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books-uk & field-a uthor=Majzlik%2C%20Linda/202-7862738-4796635 Most recent culinary inspiration was a restaurant in Aberdeen. Aberdeen is pretty bad for veggies, so for vegans it's a bit of a hunt to find food. However, there is a wonderful afro-caribbean restaurant called " Soul & Spice " (http://soulnspice.freeservers.com/). Half their menu is veggie, and most of the veggie dishes can be vegan (pretty much all of them from what I remember). We had veggie stew and spinach & pumpkin seed curry with fufu (made of cassava flour, and like firm mashed potato, you tear lumps off to dunk in the curry / stew :-) ). Living near Brixton, a quick trip to the Index bookstore produced various cookbooks and some more recipes to butcher. > Also, i made some cookies yesterday and they were awful. > They had this bitter aftertaste and when my boyfriend tried them he > described them as " pure evil! Guest guest
Hi Laura, I'm newish so I haven't talked much about food yet either. I love scrambled tofu with turmeric to make it look eggy with any veg like mushies, broccoli, mixed herbs with toast and a dollop of ketchup. Pancakes with maple syrup are great and I simply replace the eggs with a tablespoon of oil. Warm salads are yum: I stir fry tofu with sunflower seeds, soya sauce and pour that over a tossed salad. Cheesy pasta always a winner... I get veggies via organic box scheme and 'staples' at local shops to avoid putting more pennies into Tesco, Asda, etc. etc. Laura Moore <child_of_the_80s wrote: Hello everyone,i had to to the group for a little while because i had some problems but i think they're fixed. Guest guest
>Saoirse Soya <saoirse_soya >Hi Laura, >I'm newish so I haven't talked much about food yet either. Nice to meet you. How are you finding your first few... days/weeks/months of veganism? I'm finding it ok so far but haven't eaten out yet, or been able to get to a health food store, or gone to a friends for food. Bit scared about people's reactions. Told my mum yesterday over the phone (we live far away) and she didn't seem to care. But that won't be the end to it. I know my mum, she'll bring it up at a really inopportune (is that a word) moment, like when i'm telling her i feel ill! Got my first verbal lashing for being vegan yesterday, although it was indirect. My boyfriends mum told me that her husband was quite wound up over me being vegan. Apparently he was all riled up saying he'd never heard anything ridiculous in all his life etc etc. Not sure how to deal with it when i speak to him. I won't mention it if he doesn't. The difficulty is that it is my boyfriends sisters wedding in May and so i asked his mum, if at the menu tasting she could ask if they do a vegan option... and thats what sparked the outburst. She did offer to ask for me, all i did was email back saying that would be great and explaining in brief what i didn't eat. Apparently he said to her cows needed to be milked... so i can shoot that one down Have you, or anyone else, received any aggression as a result of your lifestyle? >I get veggies via organic box scheme and 'staples' at local shops to >avoid >putting more pennies into Tesco, Asda, etc. etc. I agree this is important. At the moment i'm kind of limited for a few reasons: 1) we're renting at the moment but about to buy and move somewhere else so i don't want to get too settled where we are. I'm not sure if there are box schemes in the area but am planning on looking into it, especially in our new house. 2) The local shops here that sell fruit and veg are pretty ropey! When we first moved here every saturday i went down to the village to buy fruit, veg etc but they used to go off so quickly, i mean a couple of days and they were always bruised. I complained but nothing changed so i gave up. Also our local shops are also chains, although not as big as ASDA like SPAR and one stop shop, they don't stock much apart from biscuits, milk and alcohol. 3) money. I'm really really broke. Although i'm earning i have debts which do affect where i shop. ASDA is so cheap that for the moment it makes sense, but i'm hoping it won't be long before i'm in my new house, with some decent local shops, a box scheme and a garden!!! (nothing to do with food but i have been dreaming about a garden!) I'm paying more renting than a mortgage would cost so i'll be able to afford to support more worthwhile companies. As an aside, although i know i've gone on long enough, when i was a student in Coventry i lived in a really multicultural area. I could walk to my local shops and they would sell all kinds of amazing ingredients! There was a fruit and veg shop which sold " normal " things and stuff like mooli, plantain, they always had loads of mango and lime etc. I'd never get this type of stuff locally here. When i move i'll be moving into Wales a bit more so the only bad thing is gonna be getting more interesting ingredients, so for that i'll probably still use supermarkets _______________ Use MSN Messenger to send music and pics to your friends http://messenger.msn.co.uk
Guest guest
You will get it a lot at the beginning . You have to show them that they can't bully you He was extremely rude saying it was " ridiculous " His behaviour /face /house/dress sense/etc might be ridiculous, but you would have the manners not to respond in such a pathetic way .He is obviously very unintelligent so probably wouldn't listen to your explanations anyway They can't cope with people who are giving them a " problem " --especially when it comes to food . I used to tell people not to bother feeding me (and I would take my own ). These days most caterers can deal with it and are quite able to cope with all the varied types of religious/allergy free diets Are you fond of your boyfriend ?. Having a father like that has probably lost him many girlfriends Got my first verbal lashing for being vegan yesterday, although it was indirect. --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Was ( maybe still am) on vegansuk, but as i do not have a pc of my own i have to rely on local library to use free e-mail / internet access. unfortunately they are tightening up on their access/firewall, and now cannot access many internet vegan sites. they must think we are all a bunch of anarchists or something, or just extremists?! > It's OK and some of us are meeting up in a couple of weeks in London. >It's at http://groups.msn.com/VegansUK/ > >You seem to be listed on it already though, but according to your profile it >has your email wrong angieright so maybe you are not getting >the email from them because the w is missed out of your name, so maybe you >did a typing error when you joined up. > >Lesley > > > >Angie Wright [angiewright] >11 March 2003 22:30 > >RE: Why is this group so quiet the last few months? > > >Vegans uncensored is quiet too > >What is the vegansUK MSN group like and how would I find it ? > >Angie > > > >~~ info ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >Please remember that the above is only the opinion of the author, >there may be another side to the story you have not heard. >--------------------------- >Was this message Off Topic? Guest guest
I am a local contact but unfortunately haven't so far attended any formal training. You don't have to have a local group to be a contact. The main thing is that local vegans and aspiring vegans know there is someone there locally for support, and I do arrange meet ups with a few other local vegetarians and vegans, although often it's only me and one other person I keep persevering and inviting people in the hope that more will become interested. I've never been asked to deal with the media although I might possibly be happy to do it. I'd be really happy to have a local group where I live but it isn't happening due to lack of interest, I can't do it all on my own and need a few other almost equally committed vegans to get a group going. I'm very keen to build vegan circle of friends and support locally. I'd say do become a contact as the Vegan Society needs more of them and if you are a contact then some other local vegans might get in touch with you. I've considered becoming a Vegan Society regional contact for this area(Worcs/Gloucs/Herefs), where I don't think they have anybody, but havebeen put off by the need to attend training courses and the expectationthat local contacts will deal with the media. As I wouldn't be paid forbeing a contact, I don't really want such formality or to have to spendtime dealing with the media. I'd just want to be a local source ofinformation and, therefore, would just expect to be dealing withquestions from local people to a certain extent and, therefore, don'treally see what benefit training would have. I'd prefer it to be a moreinformal thing where the local contacts refer stuff they can't deal with(such as media requests) up to the Contacts Co-ordinator (or whateverhe/she is called). Are there any Vegan Society local contacts on this list?Chris W~~ info ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Please remember that the above is only the opinion of the author, there may be another side to the story you have not heard.---------------------------Was this message Off Topic?
