One of the glories of living in London is the abundance of *interesting*

grocery shops, having mooched caribbean and chinese grocers, I discovered a

fairly local mediterranean supermarket... As well as nice (but relatively

available) things like tins of stuffed vineleaves, aubergines in tomato

sauce, olives etc., they also do jars of paprika sauce which seem to

basically be pureed aubergine & red pepper... I think it's meant to be an

ingredient but it's great just spread on toast. Lots of lovely sheets of

filo-type pastry too (£1.40 for quite a few sheets), *and* angels hair

pastry strands to try and make interesting things with (both being just

flour, water, salt if I remember correctly, and fresh from the fridge). It's

amazing how much good vegan food hides in these places, and how cheap they

are for interesting things.

They also do wonderful (and huge) jars of pickles...

The shop in question is : Mediterannean Food Centre, Streatham Hill, London

on the off-chance anyone finds themselves in the area.

Not much good for people in small places, and one of the things that makes

it hard to consider the leaving the city and getting some peace and quiet

:-)

Trying to add some noise to the list, maybe we can get a " shop review "

thread going :-)

Don't forget to check out the lactic acid in olives, think it's not always

vegan. Tho sorry to post such a negative reply... let me think of something

more interesting/useful... hmm....

Got it!

We've got a handy little " corner shop " that has started selling fresh

(sometimes!) fruit & veg. But it's on a main road that has quite a lot of

traffic so I'm a bit wary of the fumes - would they contaminate the food?

Well... one of the joys of vegandom is that looking at ingredient lists so

much, I've started judging them on length. If there's more than a couple of

ingredients in something basic, I'll look for one with fewer ingredients.

I'm sure that most food in supermarkets these days doesn't sit around long

enough to really *need* all the preservatives etc. that they shove in... So

lactic acid in the olives basically means I'll look for a more

straightforward ingredient list (for preference, olives in oil...).

I do exactly the same. Particularly with things I know how to make, like

bread - that should be flour, salt, sugar, water, oil, yeast .. flour

improver is acceptable since it is only Vitamin C.

I was horrified when looking at the ingredient labels of bread in the US -

twice as long as anything you'd see here!

Another rule I live by is " if I can't pronounce it, I don't want to eat it " .

I actually stopped shopping at a local fruit and veg shop in favour of

supermarkets a bit further away because the man smokes in the back room of

the shop, with not even a door in between the back room and the shop itself.

The shop was full of the stench of tobacco smoke, and that is a much more

concentrated poison than traffic fumes from the road in my opinion (it

certainly affects me more, whether or not it contaminates the food, although

I do agree that traffic fumes are pretty bad). One would think that small

shopkeepers would make more of an effort to keep up good standards and not

smoke in work. I also don't buy from market stalls where the people selling

fruit and veg are smoking (and amazingly I've seen quite a few), it's much

more intrusive on my airspace than trafic fumes I find.

We have a Budgens supermarket quite near us which has some interesting

looking Sri Lankan tinned vegan foods but the ones I tried were all

extremely hot and spicy unfortunately, more so than any Indian food I've

tasted. I got a tin of ackees there the other day too.

They used to have a little organic section as well with some of the vegan

Dove's Farm biscuits and Seeds of Change sauces.
