Guest guest
> " Steve Welburn " < > >Tell us where in the country you are, and maybe someone local will have >suggestions :-) Have you got the Vegan Society's Cruelty/Animal Free >Shopper guide ? It's amazing some of the things that are okay. I live in Cardiff, south wales. In Whitchurch, if anyone knows the area. I know Beanfreaks is good in town but its just getting there as i don't drive. My boyfriend drives or i can get the train on a saturday. Its not far but i have a bad back which makes carrying stuff awkward. I've got the cruelty free shopper and have been making a list of the stuff in " normal " supermarkets i can buy eg biscuits. >Also, if you can track down a Co-Op in your area they label their own-brand >stuff when it's vegan friendly. Not sure about a coop but will definitely have a look for one. >There's also www.veganstore.co.uk for all sorts of weird stuff, and >www.redwoodfoods.co.uk for vegan non-cheese / non-meat products. Do they deliver at specific times because i work and won't be in normally during the day (off work at moment coz of bad back)? I've been looking at the vegan store and it looks pretty cool but i am worried about being in to receive the delivery. I work in a hospital so anything left for me at work wouldn't get there. If you're net in does stuff go back to the PO for collection coz i could deal with that. >Personally, most of the weekly shop (for 2 people) arrives in the form of >the weekly organic veg. box.... I love the idea of getting a veg box but not sure about schemes in my area. I really should find out. I've lived here since July and i'm still not familiar with the area and the " amenities " . >Name the ingredients, and we may be able to offer suggestions as to where >you'd find them, or replacements, or other names for things (e.g. Garbanzos >= Chick Peas). I guess egg replacer is a big one, for baking. Is it any good? I've read about using cornflour and soya milk or something instead but not sure which works best. Also i buy tinned beans - chickpeas, black eyed beans, kidney, cannelini, broad and flageolet. But i don't know the difference other than the way they look so i'm not really sure which to use for what. I really should google this one and see what comes out. >Let us know what you're eating, and we can try and suggest variations on >the themes to liven it up. I do really enjoy cooking and i've never really eaten ready meals. I think i'm a pretty good cook so its just getting the ideas. I can make things like chilli, bolognaise, tomato based casserole, shepherds pie, stir friend veg etc. But many of these things rely on tomatoes for the base. I think i need ideas for other sauces/bases to make it more interesting. I'm also thinking about lunches. When i'm at work i need something compact and easy to eat eg sandwich or usually something that can be eaten cold. I heard that you can make spreads using pulses or beans but haven't got a clue how to go about it. Any ideas? >There are lots of international veggie cook books However, these are all >*veggie* not vegan cookbooks, so some playing >with ingredients is required. I've got a few vegan cookbooks and a few veggie ones but they're not international so maybe i should look at getting one of those, maybe borrow from the library and copy the good recipes I've started going through the veggie ones and marking vegan recipes or recipes that can be converted. But they are often quite americanised. I belong to a few veggie and vegan cookery lists but most of the members are (again) american so often the ingredients don't exist or are hard to get over here. Its nice to join a British group. >Most recent culinary inspiration was a restaurant in Aberdeen. Aberdeen is >pretty bad for veggies, so for vegans it's a bit of a hunt to find food. >However, there is a wonderful afro-caribbean restaurant called " Soul & >Spice " The meal you had there sounds delicious. I actually found a restaurant which looked like it had a vegan section on its menu. I say looked like because it wasn't marked up as vegan on the menu outside the building but a whole section was based around veg and tofu. It was a thai restaurant i think but i haven't eaten there yet. For anyone who lives in the area, its in Cardiff bay near the big metal ring thingy (!) >Tell us the recipe you're using and we'll try to help! The cookie recipe used flour, baking powder, sugar, spices, vegan marg (i used pure sunflower spread) and water. I think there wasn't enough sugar but that still doesn't explain the aftertaste properly. Must be the marg! What do you think? Thank you very much for the reply. I know i've asked alot of questions and i feel like a pain in the arse but i do really appreciate it. Thanks, Laura _______________ Overloaded with spam?
