Guest guest
As a child, my family had pets, well, dogs at various stages, and the odd rabbit / hamster / gerbil etc... As a vegan, although I loved having pets, I will not take on a new one. It just doesn't fit, it's a line in the sand and I stand on one side of it. Same way I avoid fined wines, and don't take photos on film and don't wear leather (well... except the odd bit which I've owned for years and can argue away in a " didn't know better " sense, and which I accept for pets). I treat it as a basic fact-of-life. Until we can sort out why most people won't understand that we don't (oops double negative) need meat products, I don't see how things can improve. Why do you keep a pet / feed your companion animal meat is just an abyss for arguments to fall into. As I believe our great ability is to think and move beyond where mere physical evolution has put us, I think people should decide what they agree with, and be willing to state it and stand by it, even if some of the consequences (e.g. no pets) are not as nice as we would choose. I do think that they are *pets* though, as companion animals suggests their complicity / choice, and any change of terms is not for the animals benefit. No matter how much we choose to treat them as companions, we are still acting as masters.
