The boring old work is why I not usually online at the end of a week, this though will be a long awaited holiday. Seattle and San Francisco, booked long before the war was publicized of course. And there should be plenty of places to eat out that way, for Seattle there is a great guide at the imaginatively titled http://seattlevegan.com, for SF I will just have to print out a collection of web sites. Otherwise it will be a lot of walking, admiring views and giving the local public transport system a good test. Michael
Guest guest
i just got back from a couple of days in San Francisco and a couple of weeks or so on the sunny Central Coast nr Sydney ... San Francisco is fine for vegans and anti-war opinions ... found several vegan spots... if you go to Haight Ashbury (corner of Haight St and Ashbury St) ... kinda nice location ... fashionable second hand clothes etc... smoke shops... 1530 Haight St is Haight St Market ... a shop selling organic foods, vegan stuff.... found a delicious idea for snackette... udon noodles, avocado, umeboshi and sesame seeds wrapped in a sheet of nori ... anyway ... maybe there were more shops like that but it was the only one i came across in my two days there... we didn't see the Golden Gate bridge... we ended up talking to a lesbian couple about war and work etc and the sadness they felt about going to war without UN backing ... and under Bush... etc... (had to point out that US was not going to war .. but was invading) and getting pissed in a bar miles from our hotel ... one the way back the taxi driver was listening to a radio station talk show about how war with iraq would be illegal and so on ... when the COW (coalition of the willing) invaded Iraq i read that more than 1000 people were arrested in ONE DAY in demos in San Francisco ... more people in one day than ever before in their history ... one old bloke left a note with the authorities and jumped off the Golden Gate bridge ... he died when they were pulling him out of the cold waters... i thought San Francisco is one of the best and safest places for vegans and anti-invasionists to visit.... very relaxed there too... if you eat Thai, Chinese etc ... you have to specify no oyster sauce... cos it's not mentionned on the menu ... suggest black bean sauce instead... ? for restaurants ... i passed Millenium ... but decided against... not for any good reasons.... it looked a little posh from the outside is sited in the Savoy Hotel on Geary St (nr Union Sq) ... but i discovered Roxanne's .... apparently caused quite a stir with chefs across the US when it opened for its inventive food... and would recommend that highly ... bit expensive tho ... 320 Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur.... be careful ... not even you average packet of crisps is vegan ...!! i think only 'Classic Flavour Chips' (not Kettle Chips) are vegan... the rest have milk products or cheese powders in them ... Australia was difficult from the ingredients point of view ... they don't have to expand the E numbers.... so wasn't sure about a few products like bread and some brands of houmous... but all supermarkets had huge choice of soya milks ... amongst the cottage cheeses i found a soy cream cheese that was lovely... and soya ice creams (in fact it was So Good Ice Cream... So Good seem to have a huge selection of products in Australia) ... large selection and variety of houmous ... we drove 6 hours north of sydney into the bush and found a lovely waterfall ... there was a cafe there that only had soya milk on their shelf... but maybe they had just run out of normal milk ... petrol stations sold soya milk ... it was everywhere... there was a thai restaurant in every village ... it seemed ... so not stuck for food... plus vegetables were cheap ... went to a arts and crafts village market in Bellingen about 8-9 hours north of Sydney ... which was great ... they had vegan cakes and vegan food ... and drinks ... and everything ... happens once a month .. bit like the local produce markets in south France (Perpignan etc...) ... sounds like you'll be doing a similar journey to ours ... lots of walking, admiring views and giving the local public transport system a good test ($1 ? for 2 hours travelling on all transport (tram, bart, bus)... so keep your ticket) mavreela [nec.lists] The boring old work is why I not usually online at the end of a week, this though will be a long awaited holiday. They're out there in the reviews on the net somewhere. I can dig out the addresses if they're needed / wanted... Haven't actually been to them, but will be in SF at the end of April (holiday, not work, planned before the current fiasco) so have already been chugging around the net. Guest guest
Hiya Oliver, Welcome back! Sounds like you had a fine time! I agree with out about the " normal " tours - the general rules seems to be " bland, expensive and inaccurate " and " suck their money from their purses " .... Am quite amused by your pissing on Bush, albeit the street! Guest guest
i couldn't pass up the opportunity.... (pissing on Bush) i almost missed the Sydney Opera House ... apart from a it being glaringly obvious on a ferry to a small little cove... nah ... i went to a koala hospital and met some koalas... stroked one ... stroked and patted the kangaroos ... met the wombats and wallabies... and a small animal sanctuary somewhere else... cos i love animals ... especially cute vegan koalas... they don't drink water apparently... they get all they need from the eucalyptus leaves ... but sometimes have to resort to water if there are no leaves around ... they're not dirty animals and don't get flees ... we were told ... and they are marsupials ... they're a bit slow tho ... size to food ratio being a problem... echidnas aren't vegan .... they eat ants ... but they are cute as well ... and i like trees and mountains and rivers and oceans... visited a cousin on the coast about a 9 hours drive north of Sydney ... lovely house she's renting .. has the Atlantic Ocean in her garden... she spends all her time collecting shells... chasing her 3-yr old along the beach ... me womaan is leaving Sydney in a few hours heading for Singapore and then Hanoi, Vietnam tomorrow... wee_siofra [c.macneill] Hiya Oliver,Welcome back! Guest guest
They probably don't get fleas because Eucalyptus is their main food source...
