Guest guest
Following two calls for someone to take over the list and little coming from it I am wondering whether there is still a need for this list? The fact is this list is very quiet and most members of the original form of this list are on VegansUncensored anyway. And for a UK vegan list the MSN group VegansUK (with an 's') seems to be much more popular also, even if the interface sucks and the content is rather poor at best. So if anyone wants to take over the list let me know, otherwise I will be tempted to close this one down (which isn't a forgone conclusion, just a possibility) as I no longer feel any benefit for me in running this list. I've never been a member of VegansUncensored, but from it's name I suspect that flamewars are not uncommon, and I for one would rather be exploring what I have in common with fellow vegans rather than finding reasons to argue with them! >And for a UK vegan list the MSN group VegansUK (with an 's') seems to >be much more popular also, even if the interface sucks and the content >is rather poor at best. Certainly it's so quiet here you can hear a pin drop, so it's hard to see a compelling reason for keeping it going on that basis! I've tried to start some threads off on occasions with little success. I'd be interested in knowing what all the rs who rarely or never post would like this list to be (assuming that it somehow isn't fulfilling the purpose they d to it for in the first place)? Guest guest
Hi, For my part, I'm also a member of VegansUncensored and Vegan_Chat, both of which are fairly active (Chat has more members, Uncensored tends to have more emails sent). VegansUncensored fills my needs for discussion, debate and the occasional good-natured name-calling, whilst Vegan_Chat is useful for news, advice, and recipes. To be honest, then, I'm not sure what separate function this list can fulfil. Granted, the others are not UK-based, but there are plenty of peple from the UK on both. So I'll stay here if it keeps going, but can see that closing it down might make sense. You do get a lot of personal arguments but because of the nature of the list you also get much better 'real' discussion. It's a 'rough with the smooth' type of situation. > I haven't looked at that list. On what basis do you say that the > content > is rather poor? A lot of spam, no real debate and a lot of personal issues. That's how it seems to me anyway, it really is up to everyone to decide for themselves but I only joined when I heard I was being talked about on that list. > I'd be > interested in knowing what all the rs who rarely or never post > would like this list to be (assuming that it somehow isn't fulfilling > the purpose they d to it for in the first place)? I'd love to know. Originally VegansUncensored was called but a number of the members said the reason they didn't participate was because of the nature of the list. So to satisfy them (and causing grief for myself in the process) I split the list into two by renaming the original one and recreating to provide the atmosphere they requested. There are over a hundred members on this list and it is a mystery what they expect to find here. Michael
Guest guest
Oh please do shut the site down!! There's too much information about nothing on the web, too much industry directed at what exactly? I watched the MSN deteriorate into irrelevance and triviality and if the Vegans Uncensored site is happening then put your energies there. --- mavreela <ndisc wrote: Following two calls for someone to take over the list and little coming from it I am wondering whether there is still a need for this list? Guest guest
Hi Michael, do you run the vegansuncensored list as well? I think I understand you right from what you said in another email that you run both lists? The way I see it is that people love debate. They love arguing, and the adrenaline rush that comes with it. I think to a certain extent debate can be good, but I think we humans in this society thrive on it in abundance because we're adrenaline junkies. I've observed it in myself and others. Some argument starts up and there's a feeling of excitement. "Ooooh and what will they say now!". It's almost like this craving of debate is from the same area of ourselves that can indulge in gossip and at worst, the dreaded soap operas. This is where we put loads of our energy, and then we wonder why we have stressful lives! This energy could be directed so much better for ourselves, AND THE ANIMALS! One idea I had that would be a more benefical use of our energies would be to talk about practicalities. We could share about what action we are taking part in at local and national level to promote veganism. For those who don't do much promoting, and who would like to but don't know how or (perhaps quite common, I know I'm one of these!) need some encouragement to GET OFF OUR BACKSIDES!!!! and do something, those more active folks on the list can get talking about what they're up to. Folks who live in the same area could discuss meeting up and going leafleting, getting signitures for petitions, two heads or more together are better than one. Those who live nearby could arrange to meet up, or even form a little group if there's enough of them, and share meals. But most likely there won't be many who live that near to each other, which is perhaps even more good reason to make use of this list to get to know each other and enjoy good vegan company. I liked what Chris said that it's important to find what we have in common about each other rather than just indulge in debate and conflict only (again I'm not saying debate isn't healthy, just that I've observed many people use it excessively). We really have to face the truth that if we don't have something to argue or disagree with, we are often quiet, now how sad is that?! Well, instead of wallowing in how crap that is, lets change it! Lets talk about what inspires us to be vegan, why we do all this label searching on products! Well, we know we're not the only ones, there are lots of other lovely people doing the same, many for beautiful compassionate reasons. We have the chance to speak to each other and I think we have to take this opportunity. I for one would like to try what Chris suggested exploring, finding things we have in common. And if we are interested in doing that then it's worth keeping the list going. Well, this has already been long, but the reason I went vegan 11 years ago was for the animals. Since then I've learnt how much health benefits there are and also environmental and spiritual benefits. I love the idea that there are equally compassionate people out there, as often in everyday life it feels that no one cares about the animals or the environment or other people come to that. I'd love to hear more from other compassionate folks out there. Jak - Jonathan Smith Thursday, October 09, 2003 5:08 PM Re: Final call [Mod] Oh please do shut the site down!!
