Thanks Simon. I was here back in March-ish time myself - i asked lots of questions and the group was so useful but then there was a bit of arguing and i got busy and couldn't stay so i left. It was thanks to you lot i went vegan! It was just a shame about the arguing.Chris wrote: It seems like a good opportunity to review what this list should be about, so I would urge the silent majority to come forward and say what kind of stuff they would like to see here, as Jak has done. This should also give Laura some pointers tohelp her get started.

I second that! That would be so helpful! Personally, i had just started another Beds_AR but was confused as how to recruit members etc. With the opportunity of taking over moderation of this group i'm hoping i could transfer my ideas across...

I was thinking - calendar with events like demos, nat vegan day etc, info on letter writing, veganism in the news, get togethers, ideas for activism etc. What do you think? this sounds great to me, just the sort of group I'm looking for in fact! But

I have noted what Michael said, and realise this might not be what others on

the list want the group to be used for. Maybe other people could speak up

with their opinion on this?

I've been searching for a group at that focuses on animal

activism in the uk but can't find any with a decent amount of people (low

numbers usually means no posts, not always, but usually). The main reason I

recently joined this list and vegans uncensored is to get talking about

doing stuff for the animals (basically what you describe above). Hopefully

this list will decide to embrace these as topics for this list.

Personally I'm on this list for *directly* vegan issues... not related stuff

like AR. It's to talk about how wonderful the possibility of Vegan Store

doing marshmallows is, to give help to people that are new to the vegan

thing, and to help people realize that veganness *isn't* all about being a

right-on activist. That has it's place, but scarey-veggieness doesn't win

people over. The common link here is *vegan*, not other interests...

If it turns into an AR list, then it won't be it'll be ARUK. And

I'll be gone.

I am still going to attempt to do all this but it may take some

time. The way things tend to be for me is i work flat out for a few

days without even checking my email, then i get one the net for a

good few hours and do lots of stuff. Now i've left my

(except this one) i might have a bit more time to do this.

Plus its half term next week! Yay!

But, as Michael says this is a vegan group not an AR one so will try

to keep a mix of stuff.

Glad you spoke up Steve. You being a co-mod will ensure it doesn't

go down the scary route i think!

Having said that, i am interested in discussing AR aswell. For me

its part of being a vegan. BUT i'm the complete poppsite to scary

and as non-confrontational as you can possibly be so i don't think

you've got much to worry about. For me its more about raising

awareness. I'll go on demos (if i ever get time) but i wouldn't

dream of confronting someone individually.

As much as i sometimes get annoyed.

I would of thought AR and Veganism would be too interlinked

for there to be a need for a totally separate group(as a

rule). Surely one of the main reasons for people being vegan

is the fact animals have a right not to be eaten.

just saying.

but animal rights is not just about their right not to be eaten

it is also about other rights that veganism does not attempt to address... this is not a fault of veganism it is just out of the scope of veganism ... and there is much to veganism that is totally out of the scope of animal rights...

thus two quite large scopes with a small joining bit in the middle ... much the same as physics and chemistry... and there are separate forums (and subforums) for them....

and if one of the main reasons for people being vegan was the fact that animals have a right not to be eaten ... then veganism fails to meet that objective ... being vegan does not stop animals being eaten.... it stops ourselves from eating animals... and thus veganism effectively ends up being a personal choice of avoidance of and alternatives to products of cruelty....

I am looking at the term ' animal rights' as in.. what are the rights of animals in general..rather than AR meetings etc.

I don't object to that subject being discussed once in a while here.

It seems to me that if people lived a vegan life style animal crulty would filter out eventually anyway.
