But i believe the belief has always been with me. I just found it hard without having any veg*n friends for support. Thats no excuse but does go part way to explaining why i didn't do it sooner. I went vegetarian for a year when i was 14, but having an unsupportive family and no money to buy my own food meant many many arguments and me eventually becoming ill. I gave in to save my relationship with my mum and because i felt so ill. Obviously now i know it wasn't coz i was veggie, but because i didn't eat properly - with no say in the food shopping it was very hard. There's only so long you can survive on nut cutlets and beans on toast! ;-) Thankfully things have changed alot since the 80s. I still can't believe the wonderful range of food i can get hold of. My parents took a while coming round to me being vegan. They're still not happy but they accept it. And they agree with me now that a veggie diet is healthier. (Just not a vegan one). My initial reason when i was 14 was animal rights. then this time because of my health - i've got m.e. and am a little bit overweight. I don't look it but i think i must have heavy bones or something! :-D Soon i cared much more about the other things i cared about when i was young and feel like i've rediscovered my true self. All those beliefs i buried have resurfaced. So now i care much more about animal and human rights, the environment, and the general state of the world. I just wish i could do more and am determined to do all i can to help. It may not be much but i'll be happy knowing i've done all i could as one individual. So i guess thats me! Laura x PS, that thing about cow's milk being compared to breast milk grosses me out too! I tell people that alot! hehe. They don't like it! Another thing is to tell them that honey is bee vomit! Strange but true! Oh, and i'm much healthier thanks to being vegan - asthma and m.e. both improved along with eczema and IBS. (yes i'm a bit of an ill person but i don't look it - people are suprised when i say i'm vegan coz i'm not stick thin and pale). Guest guest
Hi again Laura, >Well, i became vegan only earlier this year, after having been vegetarian since last July. >But i believe the belief has always been with me. I just found it hard without having any >veg*n friends for support. Thats no excuse but does go part way to explaining why i >didn't do it sooner. I didn't have any vegan friends either. I found I had to be my own source of motivation. Actually it wasn't hard for me as I was so determined after reading the info I'd got off my friends' friend (not my friend, didn't get the chance to know her unfortunately) I just couldn't face using products that were directly linked to animal abuse >I went vegetarian for a year when i was 14, but having an unsupportive family and no >money to buy my own food meant many many arguments and me eventually becoming >ill. I've been interested in that since 2000, but am finding it very difficult to give up cooked food. I managed almost 100% for 3 months back in 2000 and felt the healthiest I've ever felt. >Thankfully things have changed alot since the 80s. sounds like you might be a similar age to me? Guest guest
Good to hear about how others came to veganism - thanks for sharing Jak. I have heard of the vegan raw food diet. I don't know much about it but have heard enthusiasts raving about it on other groups. There's supposed to be a really good book just called Raw. I'm in my early 20s btw, but feel older if that makes sense. My friends are all late 20s, early 30s. I *hate* being called the baby of the group!
