Guest guest
Hiya Jak! Are you interested in raw food too? I have been for about 3 years now and try to eat at least 50% raw, although it's been slipping for a while. I can't say I agree with all the common claims in the raw food movement, but I do believe it's the closest to the right idea that we'll get! Hugs, Elisabeth=)
Guest guest
Hi Elizabeth :-) >Are you interested in raw food too? yes >I have been for about 3 years now and try to eat at least 50% raw, although it's been >slipping for a while. Same with me on all these! I first was introduced to the raw diet in spring 2000. I tried for 3 years to try to be high raw, but just was always slipping back to cooked (I'm quite an emotional eater) so now I'm accepting that high raw is not happening right now, and even 50% would be good! >I can't say I agree with all the common claims in the raw food movement, but I do >believe it's the closest to the right idea that we'll get! I'm totally in agreement with the idea that raw foods is the most natural diet. It just doesn't make sense burning our food. As we know from the science lab at school, when you heat a chemical over a bunsen burner you get chemical changes. Our food is made up of chemicals, so when we cook it we " warp " it from it's naturally occuring state. That's why researchers are now finding more and more things like carcenogenics in cooked food. I just wish I could shake off the cravings to eat it! Nice to chat with another raw fooder (allbeit raw fooders in spirit, but not manifest fully in the physical yet ; - ) Jak
Guest guest
Hi again Jak! Interesting that we've so much in common when it comes to raw. I decided in the end that I was happy with a sort of " raw Energy " or " Fit for Life " dietstyle with 50-75% raw, (ideally!!!), and periodic juice cleanses and raw days. It works for me on the whole and I'm very much against giving oneself a hard time about what one eats and beating oneself up for having the odd plate of chips. I think being happy in oneself is far healthier in the long run and, as I once said on my raw group, 'stress can kill a LOT faster than diet can, so relax and enjoy!'=) Just shared a nice mango with my hubby for breakfast! Yum! He's neither vegan nor interested in making complete changes, but he likes the food I make at home, (vegan, of course), and he loves fresh fruit, juices, smoothies and salads, so I'm really a lot better off than many people who are diet conscious when their family aren't. What about you? Get any support at home? Are you a FRESH member? I was for a year. Love and pomegranates, Elisabeth=)

It's so true. I don't know why, but the food side seems to sink in more as important than the stress, although obviously this is totally true - stress is probably the worst factor in most our lives. That's why I decided to leave alone that debate, also I just don't have the time to get involved anymore ; -) >Just shared a nice mango with my hubby for breakfast! >Yum! mmm I love mango, especially when they're smooth and juicy (not the stringy ones!) >he loves fresh fruit, juices, smoothies and salads, so I'm >really a lot better off than many people who are diet >conscious when their family aren't. I love having my smoothie in the morning. Usually has bananas in, and then what ever ripe fruit is available. An example of one of my smoothies is bananas, strawberries and mango. I add a little water and raw tahini, which I never believed would taste good in a fruit smoothie until a friend went on and on about it, so I tried it and it's delicious! >What about you? Get any support at home? My husband's into the same diet. In fact when we managed high raw, he was very serious about it and managed 100% (I on the otherhand would indulge in a chocolate fudge flapjack every lunchtime, which eventually the company turned 'round and changed their minds and said it wasn't vegan anyway!)Now I wish my indulgences were only that small ; - ) >Are you a FRESH member? I was for a year. Yes I was for about the same time back in 2000/2001. I was a member of Harmonious Living for quite a while too. Enjoy the mangos! Yup, sometimes I gross myself out too!!! I don't let it bother me too much though - just make up my mind to do better later on. Having said that, Tescos are doing 3 boxes of " After Eights " for £5 and there's a new orange flavour one..... I bought some and am clearing them out faster than I would like certain acquaintances to know about!!!!=) > I know! It's so true. I don't know why, but the food side seems to sink in more as important than the stress, although obviously this is totally true - stress is probably the worst factor in most our lives. I think it's the single most important factor in why I became ill. Of course, there's a genetic component too, but I'm sure that, had I not allowed myself to get worked up and into certain unhealthy thought patterns, I could have spared myself a long, long illness.=( Well, we're always wise in hindsight and I can at least advise others and apply what I've learned myself. It's never too late until you're dead, right??=) > mmm I love mango, especially when they're smooth and juicy (not the stringy ones!) Ours wasn't too good today. I think the best part of the season is through for the time being. They seems to be best and cheapest late summer/early autumn and late winter/early spring for the southern crops. > I love having my smoothie in the morning. Usually has bananas in, and then what ever ripe fruit is available. An example of one of my smoothies is bananas, strawberries and mango. I add a little water and raw tahini, Yeah, I should make more smoothies for breakfast as they really are good for me - all that fruit in one go. I also use bananas and whatver soft fruit is in season, but I squeeze a few oranges to incresae liquid instead of the water and, although I've used small bits of avocado in the past, (makes it like milkshake!), I've never thought of using tahini. But heavy for my mornings, I think, but each to his/her own!!=) > My husband's into the same diet. Oh, good for you! > Yes I was for about the same time back in 2000/2001. I was a member of Harmonious Living for quite a while too. About the same time as me, then. I joined late 2000 but I never got around to renewing my sub. I keep thinking about taking out the mag sub though. HL never really appealed as, although I've 'met' Ruth on- line and find her very pleasant indeed, I'm just not into a lot of the things that she is. That's one thing that I didn't like about FRESH etc, all this 'spirituality' stuff which is not up my street. I recognise the value of it, but I don't scratch the itch in the same way!!!!LOL!!! OK, must think about lunch. I'm WELL hungry. Salad with something simple, I think and maybe I just might make some carrot, apple and lemon juice first - rocket fuel! Hugs, Elisabeth=)

So I have to wait until winter, unless I want a mango sponge! It can be so frustrating when you peel one, and then you manage to just get about 1 centimeter thick flesh from it, if that, before you find a fibrous sponge right to the core. I've sometimes thought about taking one back (they're so expensive, especially organic) but can you imagine the look on the customer service person's face if they were presented with an orange mushy sponge! ; - ) >I've never thought of using tahini. But heavy for my mornings, I think, but>each to his/her own!!=) maybe you could try it as a desert with your dinner. I also like to get the tahini down me because it's quite rich in calcium, and I think I might be a bit deficient >OK, must think about lunch. I'm WELL hungry. Guest guest
Howdy Jak! How's Sunday been treating you??=) > Oh no, don't tell me that!!! And you say there's an orange flavour! ; - ) And they are DELICIOUS! Orange is my fave fruit flavour for sweets!!! > That's the attitude! I can't remember for sure, but did you say the illness was chronic fatigue? Thank you!=) Yes, it is CFS/ME, but nothing like as bad as you hear of some poor people suffering with - unable to get out of bed etc, although I've been close to that in the past. Getting there. Slowly, but I'm on the mend.=) I'm esp grateful to ahve my mental ability back good and sharp so I can read and study which is one of my greatest joys. I'm taking GCSE Human Physiology and Health this year which is fascinating and I intend to get an A*. Will keep you posted!!! Hope I get chance to touch on vegan issues in the coursework section. >taking one back (they're so expensive, especially organic) but can you imagine the look on the customer service person's face if they were presented with an orange mushy sponge! ; - ) That I would like to see! Where do you shop? Where are you based too? I'm in Leeds and we shop at Morrisons (cheap) and Tesco (also not too pricey). I'd rather buy all organic from local producers and wholefood co-operatives but we simply can't afford it.=( > maybe you could try it as a desert with your dinner. I'm rather into food combining so I would always have smoothie as a starter. We had one as more or less sub for dinner this evening. We had a fairly large lunch, (w/meal pasta with a very vegetably sauce and a good salad, preceeded by apple, carrot and lemon juice - home juiced, of course), so we didn't need much tea. We've been quite well behaved today - says she having just downed 3 After Eights!!! >I also like to get the tahini down me because it's quite rich in calcium, and I think I might be a bit deficient Really? Why do think so? I'm just curious as to how it might manifest itself.=) I never worry about calcium as we eat a lot of raw greens and have low protein diet with no smoking, coffee, fizzy drinks etc so calcium balance should be excellent. I get a fair amount of tahini in all the humous we get through. I just LOVE it! > sounds good! sometimes I think we go wrong and don't have as much raw as we'd like, is the preparation of salad, all the rinsing. Then we end up out, and wanting to snack and then....well you know the story! I like to wash all the salad veggies when we get them which reduces prep time later on. Also, with greens, I just chop them as they are straight into the colander, (sp??), then rinse the ready chopped bits. Might help, you never know!!=) We often feel something is missing without a salad. Martin is always asking for " something fresh " with it!!=) Got a nice pineapple in the kitchen. Bet it doesn't last long..... Hugs, Elisabeth=)

Of course a lot of ethical vegans boycott After Eights because they are made by Nestle. You can get similar items from Dr Hadwins (and also same brand in high street stores) though I haven't seen any Orange ones. Michael

Oh yes, they are, aren't they? Never thought of that. There always seems to be a catch, doesn't there? A truly ethical product is hard to find and, often way over my limited budget. Sigh. >You can get similar items from Dr Hadwins (and also > same brand in high street stores) though I haven't seen any Orange ones. No orange flavour? How dreadful!!! Seriously though, I've see the DHT adverts in " The Vegan " etc and have often though it would be nice to treat myself to their vegan choc goodies, but they're just SO pricey. One day, I will go mad and splash out. It's our 5th wedding anniversary this year and I'm hoping we can go away for a nice weekend trip, (esp as the big day is on a Saturday), and I might just take a box of vegan chocs with.
