Guest guest
Dear List, I was wondering what situation was for the 'average' vegan when it comes to the recommended 5 portions of fruit and veg a day? It's something I have no trouble with at all, esp eating a lot of raw fruit and salads, but I know many non-vegans really struggle with it. What's everyone's experience here? Hugs, Elisabeth=)
Guest guest
Hi Well, I tend to have about 3 pieces of fresh fruit a day. Then I'll also have a couple of portions of vegetables at teatime, but cooked. I think that initially the idea was 5 pieces of fresh fruit/veg a day, but then companies snatched the idea for their own marketing purposes, and proceeded to tell us that their processed foods count towards the 5-a-day. So now you get daft situations like canned baked beans claiming to count as one of your portions. If you believe advertising like that, then I would count as having many more than 5 portions a day - if you include things like fruit juice and baked beans. I suppose non-vegetarians/vegans are too busy eating meat, fish, cheese etc based products, and so are far less likely to have fruit/veg forming the basis of their meals. Further support for the view [knowledge] that vegetarianism/veganism is healthier. My (meat-eating) boss found out the other day that I am vegan, when he was asking people of any good restuarants to go to locally. I explained about the veggie+vegan restaurant in town and he said something like "That sounds good, I should go there; I know I should start eating more healthily." - just shows, some meat-eaters know deep down that vegetarianism (they haven't extended it further to veganism yet I don't think!) is healthier. Great if people choose veggie options more often just because of their health concerns. Not as good as if it were for animal concerns (instead or as well), but better than not. There's hope yet! Now why doesn't that surprise me, huh???=( Yes, now they say that one portion can be pre-packaged juice and one something else that's not too helpful. Baked beans don't count though. They're pulses, not vegetables, but I do tend to agree that someone, somewhere would like us to think otherwise.... > I suppose non-vegetarians/vegans are too busy eating meat, fish, cheese etc based products, and so are far less likely to have fruit/veg forming the basis of their meals. True, true and they also focus on the starch bit too and veg is just a sideshow. As for fruit, well that's just for kids and health freaks, right??LOL!!=) When I was in Germany a couple of years back I was discussing meal planning with our hostess there. She asked me where I started as she started by deciding which meat to do. I said that I started by how much time there was and was there enough time to make a juice or another fruit type starter, then moved onto what veggies there were in and which would go in a salad and which were to be cooked, then thought about the starchy bit or even a burger type thing to go with it.=) >he said something like " That sounds good, I should go there; I know I should start eating more healthily. " - just shows, some meat- eaters know deep down that vegetarianism (they haven't extended it further to veganism yet I don't think!) is healthier. Yup, I've had that a lot too. Do you find like I do that many people will admit this as long as there aren't too many others that they want to appear cool in front of around???=) Most men won't admit to doing stuff for their health if someone else can see them!!!!=) I had an odd experience whilst living in Taiwan. My host family were Japanese and, on the first evening with them I explained that I was vegetarian, (not vegan at that point, but I rarely touched much dairy etc), and my host mother said (rough translation) " It's better to be vegetarian " . Later on, when discussing what I would cook for my future husband, she told me that, if I didn't cook tasty meat and fish dishes for my hubby, he wouldn't love me anymore!!! I found it unlikely I would marry such a shallow man, but was delighted that my hubby said, " As long as it taste OK, it doesn't matter. " And he's been OK with it all the time.=) So, Mieko was wrong, mercifully for me and my marriage, but I thought it was funny that she would acknowledge that it was better not to eat meat, but then tell my I MUST cook it for my hubby!!!=) Circular reasoning alert!!!=) >Great if people choose veggie options more often just because of their health concerns. Not as good as if it were for animal concerns (instead or as well), but better than not. There's hope yet! Indeed. Sometimes it's not the whys that matter so much as the end result.=) Can work negatively too - someone can think they're doing the right thing and say something really unkind!!!!=) Life as an imperfect human!!!
