Guest guest
Jak, i liked your anaolgy about the path of life... leading to the corner store. I wonder what will be in the corner store that awaits us all at the end? I hope they stock Tofutti Cuties! ;-) Lesley and Jak, i agree with you in that this forum should be a place to discuss all aspects of veganism and what that means to each of us. I don't know what you guys think but i did start a UK AR group before i rejoined this group (although i haven't invited anyone so no members as yet). I was going to cancel it but maybe it would be useful? Would anyone be interested in joining? The address is: http://uk.UK_Animal_Rights/ As far as i know it would be the only UK AR group - unless anyone can think of another. Oh, and when i mentioned posting about AR i was thinking more about what Jak was saying - i don't forward mails from other groups etc. So don't worry. :-) For those people who are vegan for compassionate reasons but don't have time to be involved in AR, i think thats fine. I personally do not want to make light of the commitment that all of us on this group have undertaken. Being vegan is a huge step. But i do think that just because some people don't have time for AR, we shouldn't discuss it. If i was posting about something i would not want or intend to make anyone feel bad if they were not able to or did not want to participate. Its down to choice and a million other resons or commitments. Oliver wrote: And to how much an extent does AR involve cruelty to human beings? Who of course are also animals.... There are groups for whom AR can involve harm to people but i think its wrong to group everyone who is active in AR together. I would never do anything to harm anyone. I'm a trainee teacher, i used to work with adults with mental health problems and i'm a member of Amnesty and Human Writes. For me AR is about peaceful means of getting the message across - letter writing, marches, contacting the media and has nothing at all to do with harm to humans. I do totally agree with what you were saying about promoting awareness of veganism though. I spend alot of time talking to friends and family about my diet and lifestyle choices and feel like i'm actually having an effect. Nothing changes overnight but every little helps.Laura x (veganvixenuk)Want to chat instantly with your online friends? Yes, I still think that's important, but can understand about you not wanting to rock the boat >I don't know what you guys think but i did start a UK AR group before i rejoined this >group (although i haven't invited anyone so no members as yet). I was going to cancel it >but maybe it would be useful? Would anyone be interested in joining? >The address is: http://uk.UK_Animal_Rights/ I joined, but was a bit confused to read your welcome message saying " Welcome to Bedfordshire Animal Rights " ?! I don't live in Bedfordshire so I don't think it's relevant to me (but why did you name the group UK animal rights?) >As far as i know it would be the only UK AR group - unless anyone can think of >another. Actally, I'm a member of a uk animal rights (it's at the main ) I thought maybe that I was already a member of your group, but it's a different one. Here's the url for it: ukanimalrights/ It seems it mostly receives forwarded emails. I personally would like to be a member of a group who are vegans and who want to talk about active ways of helping the animals (amongst other topics) but without loads of those forwarded mails. >But i do think that just because some people don't have time for AR, we shouldn't >discuss it. i agree, I think if this is a general vegan community, people should chat about what brings them together as vegans, and for many that is ethical reasons/for the animals. but like i said, i can understand you feel awkard in your position and not wanting to upset anyone. although it seems with this one, you can't avoid upsetting people...in that there are people here who don't want to hear about animal rights and those who do. IMO, those who don't can just delete the mails if they're not interested. I think it was Chris who mentioned about having a poll so that all members can vote whether they want to allow AR as a topic or not, I think that was a fair suggestion. I mean you don't see the vegan magazine avoiding AR articles, so why should a vegan online community avoid the topic? It just seems a shame if this group becomes a misrepresentation of the vegan community at large, just because some individuals are not interested in hearing about a certain topic. A poll would reflect what the vegans in this group think (as long as they vote! but maybe people are more likely to vote than speak up individually on this matter). >If i was posting about something i would not want or intend to make anyone feel bad if >they were not able to or did not want to participate.
