Complete aside but related to the question of the objectivity of good

and bad is the question of intrinsic value, which is a major

environmental issue.

 

Take the remote Alaskan wilderness, Mr Bush would like to mine it,

environmentalists would like to protect it. After dismissing that it's

aesthetically pleasing to humans, and allowing that the wildlife that

lives there will be protected then what is wrong with us " spoiling "

" untamed " areas? To say that there is requires us to assign an object

value to them that applies regardless of humanity and its judgments.

 

A much more difficult issue than that of good and bad which are so

obviously subjective terms. Try and define them in an objective manner

(in those senses which do not mean something like " thorough " .

Intrinsic value also has a rôle to play in veganism as it can be used

to argue that animals have a right not to be used by humans even though

they may lack rationality or sentience (themselves debatable terms)

which are often used to dismiss attributing them the same benefits as

are given to humans.
