Dear all,

Hello. Being relatively new to the group I have spent the last 10

minutes reading through your comments regarding raw food vs cooked,

and it's a captivating subject. It strikes me, and I am in agreement

with Elizabeth on this one, that as in anything balance is the way.

Also the comments made, again I think by elizabeth, about

menstruation not being actually natural was equally fascinating.

Speaking to a vegan friend of mine (I am shortly to become vegan

myslf, you'll all be pleased to hear...) we were discussing how

Cantonese people are mainly vegan (forgive me if my facts are a

little wayward; as I said I'm new to this) and said they have no word

for menopause. Clearly this lead me to the comment - why? Don't they

stop bleeding? After having read Elizabeth's posting, I now think do

they bleed at all?? You mention there are known groups for whom

menstruation doesn't occur - do you have any more information on

that? Again, it's so interesting, even as a 'theory'... (Whatever

your views on that happen to be!)

With kindness,

Charlotte.

please read for further info on menopause differences between Asian and Western women... (i've read only the first few points... but seems relevant...) ...

i don't think the Cantonese diet is mainly vegan however... that would be a sweeping generalisation covering millions of people ...

i would say that menstruation is pretty much a natural occurrence ... no? do you mean the menopause is not a natural occurrence?

"The ageing Asian woman, presumed to be untroubled by symptoms at midlife as she gains in status and power, has found her way into the popular self-help literature on menopause written for western woman. The two million women in the United States who experience severe symptoms at menopause are contrasted with the 'absence of incapacitation of Indian women'.[19] Although focusing on the herbal remedies of traditional Chinese medicine, Bronwyn Whitlocke also refers to the higher status in some societies of 'menses-free women ... revered for their knowledge' and free of the 'the reins of motherhood'. She quotes feminist Betty Friedan who links a symptom-free midlife transition to 'full and happy lives without a high level of stress'.[20] Patricia Kaufert warns against over-simplistic claims of a 'utopia for women in middle age' in traditional societies.[21] Rather than arguing that women gain status as they age, we might equally say that they lose the negative status of being a menstruating woman of reproductive age.[22] Furthermore, the mother-in-law's comparative leisure and power in the household is often directly derived from restrictions imposed on her daughter or daughter-in-law."
