Clearly the vegetarianism related to their religous beliefs is an

attractive part of their culture (one religion which does have some

benefits). But what about the caste system which entrenches social

divisions ?

Yes, I think there is this romantic myth that India is somehow an

idyllic place and a haven for vegetarians. AIUI most Hindus are not

vegetarian (some Hindu sects are), and of course the non-Hindu

population are meat-eaters (apart from small but notable exceptions

like the Jains). There is a huge, barbaric and polluting leather

industry - most of the cheap leather we see in Western stores has

been imported from India - there was a big campaign against this a

few years ago (PETA ?) as I recall, but I doubt that much has

changed. And as you mention, basic human rights still have a long way

to go (the caste system, child labour, women's rights, etc).
