But what about the caste system which entrenches social >divisions ? > Yes, I think there is this romantic myth that India is somehow an idyllic place and a haven for vegetarians. AIUI most Hindus are not vegetarian (some Hindu sects are), and of course the non-Hindu population are meat-eaters (apart from small but notable exceptions like the Jains). There is a huge, barbaric and polluting leather industry - most of the cheap leather we see in Western stores has been imported from India - there was a big campaign against this a few years ago (PETA ?) as I recall, but I doubt that much has changed.
