A buddy I know (who lives in Romania) asked me if Avon and Oriflame

products are tested on animals, and if they contain animal derived

ingredients.

As I did not know the answer to this, I thought I would see if

anyone else does.

She would like to buy Avon and Oriflame products as they are cheap

and delivered straight to the home, but she will not if they are

tested on animals and/or they are not vegan.

If anyone knows about these two companies, I would be grateful if

you could pass on the information,

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure Avon isn't tested on animals. As for ingredients, I

suppose you'd have to check the individual products. Sorry I can't be

more help!

I did get in contact with Avon a while ago to try to find out, the'r

animal testing policy seems good, but they refused to answer my

multiple emails about animal ingredients, and what actually was vegan.

According to the BUAV factsheet E3 (March 2004), Avon are a " company

that claim not to conduct/commission animal tests, but do but newly

animal tested ingredients " .

I cannot find a reference to Oriflame within the BUAV material, but

there is a section on their own website which states that they abide by

the Humane Cosmetics Standard:

That's strange - Oriflame are not listed in the PETA guide as abiding by the

Humane Cosmetics Standard. It says that they do not test their products or

ingredients on animals, but they'd have to have a fixed cut-off date to meet

the Humane Cosmetics Standard, so I guess that's where they fall down on

meeting the Humane Cosmetic Standard (and the BUAV's criteria). It looks

like they're lying on their website.

www.leapingbunny.org lists the companies that meet the standard in the US,

which is where Avon is based. For the UK, the BUAV is the holder of the

standard. As far as I understand, Avon don't have a fixed cut-off date, so

they don't meet the standard either.

The general website is here: http://www.eceae.org/english/whoweare.html

I happen to know someone on another group who happens to be an Avon lady so I asked her, because I was also curious and here is her reply.

Hi Lesley,

I seem to have deleted the email I got back from Avon.

Basically what they said was that they do not test on animals (why they don't promote that anymore I don't know), they didn't say what the cut off date was, but I do know that Avon were one of the first companies to stop using things tested on animals, I can remember 10 years or more back they were saying that.

They said that they 'didn't have time' to compile a list of what was vegan but that the majority of their products did not contain animal ingredients. However, they do have a 'no questions asked' returns policy so if someone ordered something and wasn't happy with what was in it then it could be returned no problems.

What I do is make sure personally I don't order anything that obviously has animal ingredients in it and then read the stuff I do buy, I don't buy make-up from them as that is what I would assume had the most tested and animal derived ingredients in it, I stick to shampoo, shower gel and soap really! I do wish that I could afford to buy organic wonderful natural stuff but unfortunately I don't have the money! Avon is easy money for me around here which is why I do it, but I wouldn't say they were particularly eco friendly or great.

Sorry I can't help further but they weren't very helpful in their reply to me. Perhaps if more people emailed them asking about vegan products they would put together a list eventually?
