Guest guest
Hi everybody I hope someone can help but to be honest I'm beginning to lose heart. I have inherited a beautiful old saxaphone, that I would love to learn how to play. The problem is that it needs re-padding and it seems that the only material they use is leather (or we could have kangaroo skin the shop assistant told us proudly). So ... does anyone know if it's possible to get non-animal saxaphone pads because my searches so far have proved fruitless. Thanks in advance Ellie
Guest guest
Hiya Ellie, I don't know much about saxaphones or their padding, but have you thought about obtaining some leather-equivalent material from a veggie shoe shop, and seeing if the music shop people would be able to re-pad it with that? Guest guest
It seems that they purchase their pads ready made, but I'm determined not to give up. Maybe if I can find the companies that make the pads I can appeal to them directly. I can't believe that it isn't possible. The shop assistant said " I think it's because musicians care first and foremost about their music, so their ethical beliefs go out of the window in favour of the best sound " this totally incensed my partner who is a musician (plays just about everything except sax!) and a long time vegan. Guest guest
Hi, My guess would be that music shops buy their pads ready-made, but if you go to a smaller instrument repairer, they should have the skill to make pads out of anything. I'm not sure pleather would be particularly good, as it seems to lose shape a little when wet (at least, my shoes do). But I'm sure a good repairer could advise. As for 'musicians care first and foremost about their music', grr...As someone who uses synthetic skins for my bodhrans despite goat skin sounding far better, non-leather bound beaters, etc, think I'd take exception to that! Guest guest
With some pretty intense searching I appear to have found some - 2 lots infact. One set in Norway, but that company hasn't replied yet and another set in the US and the company have been extremely helpful. Things are looking up!
