What did we expect from Basescu ? Spring-Summer 2001 http://asokha.tripod.com/dogmassacre/ Are our memories so short? Have we forgotten the Bucharest dogs? No! Never! Brigitte Bardot left Romania having spent a fortune to set up a spay/neuter program for the street dogs of Romania. No sooner was she out of the country than the Mayor of Bucharest, now the president of this poor country, Traian Basescu gave the orders to municipal employees to shoot, poison, beat to death, hang, and in short to kill by any means possible all the street dogs they could get their hands on. Those who were not poisoned and left to agonize by the side of the roads (where the schoolchildren had to pass them on their way to school in the morning), or otherwise killed on the streets, were rounded up and interned in the sterilization centers paid for by the Bardot Foundation, which were used as concentration camps to hold the dogs and then exterminate them (no, not by humane euthanasia). Campaigns of e mails to the officials, to the then president of Romania, to the monster/traiter/killer Basescu were only ridiculed, and laughed at. Public opinion could not be mobilized. Brigitte Bardot, outraged, demanded a meeting with French Prime Minister Jospin who, obliged to receive her, nevertheless replied that the massacre on the streets of Bucharest (which then spread to other Romanian cities where the dogs were massacred in the same way) was an internal affaire of the Romanian country and did not concern the French government. The children who contacted us begged us to tell the world, so that decent people would come to stop these crimes-- but we had to reply that all our efforts could mobilize no help at all for the dogs. One young girl told us she did not want to live in a world where such things could happen, and we understand her despair. Brave people from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and some even here in France, got in their cars and drove to Romania to fill up with all the dogs they could take, to get them out. Basescu lied to the world about the number of strays, to exaggerate the problem, to justify his radical solution. Romania citizens who tried to help or to hide the dogs were assaulted. One old lady was hospitalized after municipal workers broke down her door to throw dogs from her 4th floor window. And not one of the big associations did anything to help, although some sent a bit of money, and sympathy... But brave Romanian people like Rolda saved dogs anyway, and many professional Romanians contacted the West by internet to denounce the massacre. Please, never forget the Romanian dogs! If the killers or their collegues come to YOUR town to promote Romanian business, let them know that in a civilized world such behavior is not tolerated. And Basescu should be a pariah to all decent people everywhere, to the day he dies. The Friends of Guénady Nice, France
