Michael, I have ordered a bazillion Vegan cookbooks etc... and Vegan living books and have joined a plethora of newsletters etc. It is a major change in lifestyle... and I am realizing just how many things in my house are the products of cruelty to animals.. its a bit overwhelming ....Right now I am determined to be as cruelty free as possible.. but I am having mixed feelings about some of it... I will no longer be a leather consumer but do I have the strength to rip the all leather seats out of my new car... sadly, no... or to throw away an expensive leather purse that was given to me several years ago? How long have you been Vegan? Do you or have you gone through any similar issues? Becoming a teetotaler and tossing out everything in my house that has come from cruelty to animals is not the easiest thing to do... Are there any other Vegans who have just recently "converted" who are also trying to reconcile what is right with what

you practically have at the time.. will I buy any more leather? Certainly not.. but do you toss expensive shoes? Ugggh? Hi Gina, Fraggle is our font of all knowledge moderator, if he dont know it it aint happenin! I think that there are a few of us tied into a family an the rat race living vicariously through him! I have been vegan for about 15 years or so, prolly more I forget that I am 45 this year, still think I am half that! My wife is an omnivore and my two daughters 9 & 12 are vegetarian from birth. Peter, Is Fraggle... Michael? He is the moderator, yes? Also, my daughter has been really playing the major debator with me about the whole vegan issue... stating that we are omnivorous biologically... and that God intended us to eat meat via Genesis... have to go back and refresh on that one to pose a good argument. She also says what now.. the cats will have to be vegan too and isn't that animal cruelty to force an obviously carnivorous animal to be vegan (god help me!). The joys of having a teenage girl in your midst! I am determined to do this... regardless of how difficult it is.. it is the only way I can live with myself. What prompted you to become Vegan? Hi Gina, and welcome to the group.

It's normally rather quiet around here but occasionally one of two of

us stir from our slumbers and a brief debate ensues.

Feel free to ask anything you like about veganism (or anything else)

and we'll do our best to help.

Paul, Thanks so much.. the welcome has been really warm and nice. I think my biggest worry is offending someone or sending someone on a rampage! Where in the UK are you and where are the best places to buy Vegan foods? I know about Holland and Barrett.. but they don't seem to have much outside of nuts and some supplements and such... at least the one at Trafford Centre in Manchester seems rather small. I don't know where there are good vegan healthfood stores or if Tesco, Sainsbury's or any of the larger chains carry vegan type foods... where do you buy most of your foods? Thank you all for your patience with my incessant questioning... Gina, Every vegan has a different story and a different view on veganism. Peter, Thanks bunches I will definitely take a look.. in response to the cats.. my cats will eat near enough anything.. I also have 3 rats ... they are supposed to be my sons but secretly they are mine ;) The cats would love to eat them... but behave when we are present so they are just not left alone together. Y'all have all just been so friendly... and its been really refreshing, almost like real time chat this evening.. as I peruse through different sites online. I really appreciate the company of all of you! Gina peter hurd <swpgh01 wrote: Gina, sorry forgot fraggle is on , getting my sites mixed up. I would recommend you check it out. The Valley

Hi Gina -

Something that will save you a lot of time and effort is to get hold

of the Vegan Society's " Animal Free Shopper " . This is an incredibly

useful pocket-sized book which lists all known vegan products both by

brand and also by supermarket. You can get the printed edition via

mail order form the Vegan Society (it's about 5 pounds) and there is

now also a free online version too, at www.animalfreeshopper.com (you

have to register online the first time you use it, but it's free).

Once you get to know which products are vegan life gets a lot easier

and you won't always be consulting your little book, but it's

indispensable when veganism is still new to you (and still very

useful occasionally even when you're an " old timer " ;-)).

Hello Gina! Just wanted to say Hi and welcome to the group, from another 37 year old Vegan :-) I actually became Vegan in 1989 and well remember going through all of the questions you raise. Good news is, it gets easier!! I'm also the only Vegan in my house, with an omnivorous husband and daughter. The thing I found when I first became a Vegan is that everyone kind of smiled knowingly and thought that I would never stick to it... well, 17 years later and they are no longer smiling :-) Your daughter will stop giving you a hard time once she's kind of got used to the idea that you are not going to go back on your decision, she'll kind of accept it as part of you and it'll get 'boring' if you know what I mean. The other thing to remember is that what you are doing here is something to be really proud of... and you really only have to answer to yourself, no one else. You are doing more for animals and the planet through this decision

than 99% of the rest of the world, so don't feel like you've got it wrong if you take a while to find your feet here. Good luck! :-) S-J xRegina Fay Brook <ginafay wrote: Stuart, I don't intend to buy anything else... are you the only vegan in your household? I am wondering how that goes when you have reluctant participants in the house. I have said that the meat in the house and all the animal products will be used (not by me) but once they are gone.. I will not buy or prepare anything else... my son has agreed but my daughter (who is 17) is grumbling. Saying.. we are supposed to eat meat.. quoting that we are omnivores.. quoting the Bible... you name it! She is the anti-vegan from Hades! My son watched a few of the videos on the PETA

Site with me.. and has agreed to go vegan but wants to use what we have first so he can adjust to the idea... Just wondering how you made the conversion.. and would welcome any advice from anyone else. Also.. I went to Tesco and found Quorn products.. but they contain eggs and milk.... what products in the UK are vegan.. where can you buy them... any tips on local UK products... coming from the USA I am still acclimating to UK food choices in general and to switch to being vegan I am a bit at a loss as to how to substitute it all.. as the books I have ordered arrive I am sure that things will become a bit clearer. I am really grateful to have this group and I look forward to learning how to eat and live compassionately. Last night I was lying in bed.. thinking of all the things I had seen and read on PETA's site.. and feeling such shame at how we as humans could be so cruel... the world is truly becoming a horrific place and it is so sad and

the true gravity of everything has begun to hit me. I am a Republican... here I think that would be called an ultra-conservative and I am at the age of 37 truly beginning to reevaluate my whole outlook on life... the world around me.. everything.. midlife crisis maybe? sans the porche, boob-job and a face-lift ;) Gina

Hi S-J aka gushoneybungirl :) Thank you so much for that... I know its the right thing to do.. and right now as with anything new it is just super awkward. I have to learn how to eat all over again. Its really comforting to hear that it does get easier from someone who has gone through it. I know I wont be changing my mind on this... and if I ever begin to falter I will just go back and look at some of the video footage I saw... thinking about it after 2 days still brings tears to my eyes. I think it all just totally scared me too.. if a human being can be so cruel to something so helpless than they could easily hurt another person.... and is there truly a difference. I watched those videos and saw so much pain in the eyes of the animals.. okay I can't go on here... I am in tears again! I am just glad that there are other people out there who are or have felt the same way... and have successfully foregone all animal products in a world flooded with them. I

really admire and respect you for having done it! Where do you live in the UK? I am in Manchester... Ginagushoneybungirl <gushoneybungirl wrote: Hello Gina! Hi Gina,

Ah, the old hoary arguments against veganism.

We are omnivorous biologically...yes, so that means we can survive on meat

or on veg. Yes, it might be natural to eat meat, but it is natural to rape,

murder and steal too - nature is cruel, that doesn't mean we have to follow

her lead. It might say we have to eat meat in Genesis, but (non religious

response) just because some bloke wrote something down a few thousand years

ago doesn't make it true, or (religious response) the bible is God's

knowledge filtered through man, who is fallible, and most definitely

tailored to the period in which is was written.

Wait until she comes across the 'animals are killed in harvesting crops

anyway'. Or possibly the 'but you drive a car which kills animals/buy vegan

food transported in vehicles which kill animals on the way' one. Or, my

favourite, 'if we didn't eat animals there would be less of them in the

world' argument.

I wrote an article a while back going through the main arguments against

veganism. I'll look it out for you if you are foolish enough to want to read

something I've written. Alternatively,

John
