This sounds like the bit in Life of Brian where they start out by saying

the Romans never did anything useful, then finish up going on about the

roads, the baths, the viaducts, the aqueducts, etc etc. Anyway, good

that some of what we've done has been appreciated. For those of you who

are members there's a whole lot more in this year's Report and Accounts

and AGM documents which should be arriving round about now. There is

also a ballot paper for election of candidates, so do please use it -

the more people who vote the more democratic the result.

The staff have put something on the website about this, I believe. Not

all of us have received this other document, which was not from the

Society, and I therefore don't know what the criteria for inclusion in

the mailout might have been. Nothing in the official documents refers

to this, including my comments on page 24, since it did not appear until

after the official documents were printed and posted, but if the picture

it gives is rather gloomy it's worth comparing this picture with the

annual report which shows quite a lot going on.

A bit of advance news to lighten the gloom: a basic nutrition booklet

has been produced in the same format at the ever popular Why Vegan

booklet and the recently published Eating the Earth. If we can get it

printed in time it will be circulated free to all members with the next

issue of The Vegan. The booklet is based on the Society's nutrition

book Plant Based Nutrition and Health which is now a textbook in

universities around the world but is a lot less detailed and just

provides clear guidelines on vegan nutrition. It will also be available

free to schools, hospitals, care homes, prisons, etc as part of our

current advocacy campaign for vegans in vulnerable situations and

members wishing to have supplies to distribute to doctors, teachers,

caterers, etc in their areas will be able to order supplies from the

Society. As with Why Vegan, these will also be free though donations to

help fund further print runs are always welcome.

The VEG 1 multivitamin, which was formulated by the author of the book

mentioned above is provided as cheaply as possible at £4.99 for three

months adult supply (eat your heart out Holland and Barrett!) or six

months for a child and supplied and even more cheaply to vegan

prisoners.

Anyway, end of apologia for the Vegan Society - we can always do better

and all constructive criticism is gratefully received.

Good wishes to all,

Vanessa (Clarke)

PS We're moving to Brum in January, so anyone within hailing distance

of the Second City is very welcome to come and visit. Meanwhile,

there's the AGM in London on 28th October - all members welcome - and we

shall have a stall at Christmas Without Cruelty on December 3rd.

Hi there,

It's disingenuous at best. I'm not happy that the Vegan Society website

is being used to take sides in the election, but all's fair in love,

war, and general elections, I suppose.

Could we possibly get it moved off the home page? The independent

" Message from Fellow Vegan Society Members " went only to Vegan Society

members[1]. But the home page tells every journalist who might cover

World Vegan Day.

[1] The message has " for full members of the Vegan Society only " at the

top of every page in block capitals.
