Why I Find It Hard To Believe That VPSG Are Losing Supporters/Donations

I would have posted this on the The Vegan Society-discussion forum -

but that is unfortunately about to be closed due to people (not me I

might add!) making posts that break the rules set by the moderators

(and getting either warned, or even having their posts edited).

Anyway, I thought this might be a better venue.

As you all no doubt no, several days ago the Vegan Society put up on a

statement on the front-page of the Society's website that included the

following text:

The Vegan Prisoner Supporters Group has asked us to publicise

this announcement :

" We were surprised to see that without our knowledge - the VPSG

was named in a document regarding voting at the next Vegan

Society AGM.

VPSG would like to make it clear that we are not in any way

involved with the document and we would like to disassociate VPSG

with the politics of this issue.

VPSG would further like to add that the input Stephen Walsh has

had into our work has been invaluable. "

As you can imagine, a lively debate developed about this in which Dave

Palmer, the General Manager (Acting) of The Vegan Society (I'm not

disclosing any information there, he told us that) made it very clear

that this was at the instigation of the VPSG due to damage they were

incurring. He said this on repeated occasions; I won't try and quote

them all, but will just quote three bits of what he said:

" The statement from VPSG came at their own voilition, they wanted

to try and stem the damage this document is doing to them as an

organisation. They have already had newsletter rs and

donors cancel their subscriptions/standing orders, so it's not

only us here at the Society that is being damaged by this

document. "

And:

" No, we felt we had to address the document after it being

brought to our attention by various concerned members and the

VPSG who are very unhappy at the withdrawal of support and

financing which the document has caused them. Hence the statement

from VPSG on the website.

Do you think we should just have ignored it and let it go on

damaging our reputation, that of the current staff and other

organisations we work alongside to provide ie vegan food to

prisoners and those in hospital/state institutions ? "

And:

" They responded so strongly because they've lost support and

financial contributions from it - how else do you think they

found out about it, apart from their members bringing it to their

attention (and removing their support from vpsg) ?

You probably don't understand their reaction because you are

unaware of the damage it's caused them (stated in several of my

posts). "

Now I said at the time that I found it implausible that people would

cancel donations merely because they'd someone, supposedly got the

impression that James G's support of the letter (and the mention next

to his name that he had worked for VPSG) indicated that VPSG were

supporting the letter.

But a little while ago something hit me. If VPSG were so worried about

this and being so damanged by this that they came up with a statement

and insisted that the Vegan Society put it up on the front page of

their website, then why didn't they post it to their own website?

http://www.vpsg.org/

(At present - 11 Oct - it currently looks like this:

http://www.criticalmiss.com/blogpics/nonblog/VPSG-Small.jpg).

It's not as though it's a website that can't be updated, since it's

pretty much in the format of a news feed/blog. And it isn't as though

it doesn't get regularly updated: they updated it 8 times during

September (4 days in a row at one point).

And yet there's nothing on there about this situation, not even a

simply one line clarifying sentence just in case someone might be

confused.

So we're expected to believe that they were so worried about the

situation that they demanded that the Vegan Society put something on

its website, but not worried enough to bother putting something on

their website?

I'm sorry, but if they really were losing large numbers of supporters

and donations over people's " misunderstandings " I'm pretty damn sure

they'd put at least a little piece up on their website clarifying the

issue.

Which makes that entire section of the front-page statement look very

suspect in my eyes.

Sorry, realised that doesn't make sense to people who don't know which

forum I'm talking about. It's actually the " The Vegan

Society-discussion " forum on Vegan Forums.

You can get to it here:

http://www.veganforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=87

....although you will have to become a registered member of the forums,

and then specifically to this forum (it's in the members

section). The moderator, Korn, has now said that he'll keep it open a

little longer, so it might be worth looking in on, as there's some

interesting (IMHO) debate on there.

And apologies for any confusion I might have caused. It wasn't until I

reread it that I realised that I was making it look like I was talking

about some kind of official Vegan Society forums. Sorry.

But there used to be a Vegan Society forum! what happened to it?

It was only open to VS memebers and contacts, as far as I knew,

Thanks for info on VPSG Jonny,
