Guest guest
I get Cheezly (and Scheese and Tofutti) from our local wholefood shop, Daily Bread. However last time I checked, our Tesco stocked cheddar Cheezly and Sainsburys stocked both that and the Tofutti soft cheese. Incidentally, the latter can be used to make a fantastic chocolate cheesecake. My wife isn't vegan and I'm also part of a group of friends who have been cooking for each other each week for over 12 years now, so I'm used to coping with mixed vegan/non-vegan dining. I did miss cheese initially but now when I've had it accidentally occasionally (that's worth another thread), its flavour isn't as enticing as I remember it. On the other hand, none of the vegan cheeses I've found are nice enough to be worth eating them on their own; I just use them as ingredients for other things. I've put on weight fairly steadily since becoming a vegan, however I was also putting on weight before as well, so I'm not blaming it on veganism! In my case, the problem appears to be too many carbohydrates - rice, pasta, potatoes etc. I'm not a big snacker and don't get cravings for chocolate, biscuits, crisps etc. but I have been used to having some sort of starchy staple in each of my meals. I've now been following Rose Elliot's " The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet " for a couple of weeks and it seems to be working for me. I'm not getting hunger pangs and I've lost about 9lb. I wouldn't want to keep it up as a " lifestyle " diet though; I'm not sure having severely reduced carbs is good long term and, for vegans, it involves a very large amount of home food preparation if you want a varied diet as there is very little suitable that can be shop-bought. However last time I checked, our Tesco stocked cheddar Cheezly and Sainsburys stocked both that and the Tofutti soft cheese. Incidentally, the latter can be used to make a fantastic chocolate cheesecake Thanks for this - I had no idea you could get these at Tesco's or Sainsbury's - in fact I've probably walked passed them and just assumed they were some form of processed cheese! I'll definitely have to walk slower down that aisle in future! Funny enough I seem to think I followed a diet of her's yonks ago, but it wasnt a low carb one - just a plain vegetarian diet one - I must have a search through the roof and see if I can find it. I think perhaps I've been consuming too many nuts/seeds/oils - I received my post of Veg 1 vitamins in the post today from the vegan society so if I make sure I take one of these a day I think I'll drastically cut back on the nuts/seeds /oil for a bit as I do need to lose a stone or two. Well I also got a copy of the Cruelty Free Shopper (not sure thats the correct title but its the book that the Vegan Society are selling on their website) and I'm going to make a cup of tea and sit and read it ......before I tackle the washing up!
