Well, I would like to express an opinion as to why in my case I don't get

more involved in this group.

I prefer to be more active on my own local veggie and vegan list, and my

vegfamilies list, and basically any veggie and vegan lists where the

group is there with the main intention of bringing more veggies and vegans

together in real life, either for activism or just socially.

The trouble with a UK-wide list like this one is that people are too spread

out and no-one seems to want to organise any real life gatherings. I am sure

many people on here must live fairly close to others on the list, but I

generally get no response here when I post about London meet ups such as the

proposed central London vegan picnic I suggested in June for many veggies

and vegans to meet up from various and local veggie and vegan

groups, and I found the lack of response disappointing and offputting. I

thought about leaving the list there and then when not one person replied.

I can't see why since we have more than 300 on the list, no-one seems to

organise any local meals out with others in the group.

I would guess that there must be at least 50 people in the London area on a

list this size, possibly closer to 100, so it is astonishing to me how few

vegans ever seem to want to be around others from the group in real life. I

have the same problem to some extent on my local veggie and vegan

group, there are many who have never come along to meet up with the group

even when they live close to us.

I don't get it!

Hi,

I see this list less as an active discussion list, so much as a place where,

if someone needs help or has a question and doesn't know anyone locally they

can turn to, they can ask here. Personally, I also occasionally post

warnings or news just to make sure it spreads.

I don't see this as a bad thing necessarily. Sure, the local lists are often

more busy, but this one has its place I think. Or at least, it doesn't seem

to hurt to remain on it!

As for the 300 members, I doubt that most of those are still current. The

list has been going for a while, and I'd be willing to be that there aren't

even close to that number of us.

We could try and count ourselves though...

Are you on VEG-London and/or Veggiesocials (both are )?

I would recommend those as good groups to join for meeting other vegans and

vegetarians in London.

They organise meals out and social get-togethers all over the London area.

Hope this helps.

Personally, I like the fact that people are spread out, as I find it interesting

to get " the bigger picture " , and I am also a member of the global site

and enjoy listening to how it is for vegans in other parts of the

globe.

Not everyone wants to join a face to face group to socialise, some just like to

keep in touch by mail.

Sorry to have to correct a couple of you, but you and Rebecca can't be

numbers 2 and 3, because Paul and myself had already posted ourselves as

those numbers first.

So far we have:

1. John Davis

2. Paul Russell

3. Lesley Dove

4. Rebecca Hathaway

5. Peter H

I would like to know how many are actively in this group and how many are

sleeping members,

Well, I read this group and contribute whenever I think I can make a useful

contribution. I've always viewed it as John does (explained below), rather

than a place to organise social events...

Depends what you mean by 'current'. I'll suggest a definition " reading every

post " .

My guess is 50-60%.

I've only ever sent one post to the list (so, Hi all!), and I wasn't even

going to bother responding to the ad-hoc count (read: it'll never work) -

what do we really gain by de-lurking like this, apart from cluttering up

the list with random numbers and taking up our time?

But if you do want the comfort factor that another semi-lurker is out there,

here it is:

The ad-hoc count should work, I'm counting, we have a good start already.

I will summarise from time to time in case of any confusion (not too

boringly often from now on I promise).

I'd also like to suggest we could put our location and if we would like real

life meetups, so any of us living close enough to each another can get in

touch.

I am sure some people will want to set up something local with other vegans,

either social or active, or join in with whatever is already established in

their area.

Many vegans still hardly meet any other vegans in real life so it seems we

could use the group to help end the sense of isolation.

We make up less than 0.5% of the population so it is quite rare to find

other vegans just randomly in day to day life (I never do).

3. Lesley Dove (Hampton, TW12, very keen to bring more vegans together

locally, both social and active, running a small local vegetarian and vegan

group)

vegans)

I'm here too! I think that's number ten, or is it eleven? I'm from

Devon, there's a fairly active vegan group locally and London's much

too far away for me to go to all these picnics, unfortunately.

I, too, see this group more as online support for vegans who don't know

many in real life, rather than physically meeting up, although that

would be fun too. I think that some people may prefer the anonymity -

if they have a question or a problem then they might feel more

comfortable talking about it to people who they don't know and will

never have to meet. *Shrug* I'm lucky enough to know quite a lot of

vegans in real life, so I don't know what it's like for those who are

struggling on their own with little real-life support.

Hi Number 10 or 11!, you are lucky to know other vegans. None around where I

live, which is another reason why I like vegan webchat sites.
