I've been doing a lot of lurking lately due to lack of time, but I still

feel it's worth being here. Once in a while I contact a new member of

the list who believes they're the only vegan for miles around just to

tell them there's a flourishing group in their area or at least a Vegan

Society local contact who'd be happy to hear from them. All these

groups and individuals are listed in the Vegan Society magazine.

There are big groups like London Vegans with more than one event a week

and smaller groups who just meet once a month for a meal, but if you're

all alone and recently became vegan it can be nice to know at least one

other vegan locally.

Also there are regular vegan festivals and food fairs around the country

(there's on in Lichfield next Saturday), some of which are advertised

fairly widely while others are primarily to show the non-vegan public

how delicious vegan food can be.

If anyone would like to know if there's a group or a local contact in

their area, just say so and I'll try and put you in touch. We don't

give so much personal detail on the website since it is accessible to

the world at large, including aggressive non-vegan weirdos who have

occasionally made a nuisance of themselves - we take our chance with the

vegan ones!

The only other time I get galvanised into saying something is if someone

doesn't realise the importance of vitamin B12 or thinks you can get it

from spirulina or whatever. Again, if anyone has any specific queries

I'll consult the Vegan Society's Nutrition and Health spokesperson

(which won't be difficult since we got married on World Animals Day last

year).

Finally, I suppose I should also confess to being the VS International

Coordinator, my particular pitch being " veganism in other countries and

cultures " so I'm always happy to try to help when people are travelling

abroad and unsure how to go about being vegan when they don't know the

language or anyone who lives there.

There are also veg*n guides to many countries and cities in the world,

there is the Vegan Passport which explains what vegan do and don't eat

in 56 languages as well as in pictures, and the Animal Free Shopper for

food and other products available in the UK (new edition coming out

later this year). Finally, there is the Vegan Society's own multi-

vitamin VEG 1, which is deliberately cheap (4.99 for three months adult

supply) which provides all 0that you need to be sure of a healthy diet

without fleecing you for a heap of stuff you don't need and which may be

toxic.

I'm based partly in London, partly in Cambridge. The Vegan Society

office is in Birmingham. Tel. 084545 88244, www.vegansociety.com

Good wishes to all,

Vanessa

Naturally. In fact, I think I'm playing there. Which hopefully won't put

_too_ many people off...

I am intrigued, are you in one of the bands Peter posted up about?

It would be good if they could get Macca though, wouldn't it?

Hi Lesley,

No. Sad to say I'm in one of the little bands who play in the gaps between

the big names!
