> === Questions about you ===

> 1/ What is your name (or what do you like to be called)?

Gayalondiel (or Gaya). It's my gamertag, not my real name, but I've been

called it for long enough that it may as well be my name.

2/ How old are you (a rough idea will do)?

25

3/ Do you know many vegans in real life?

Nope, I'm the only one. I am from a family of vegetarian though and know

quite a few of those

4/ How long have you been a vegan, and how long vegetarian before that?

Vegan - I started last year, the doctor made me stop when I had a nervous

breakdown, and I started again just after Easter this year. Vegetarian -

all my life. :D

5/ Why did you become vegetarian/vegan (if you are neither it would be

> useful to explain why you joined this list)?

Mostly on animal welfare grounds, a bit because of the environmental

impact. Since my first time lapsed though I discovered a mild lactose

intolerence which has helped put me back on the path.

=== Questions about your area ===

>

> 6/ Whereabouts do you live?

Gloucestershire

7/ How good a place is it for vegans?

Not brilliant for eating out - our only vegetarian restaurant in my hometown

closed down a few years ago. We're ok for organic produce and there's one

street in particular that has a natural health shop, and organic supermarket

and a Co-op all together, so you can cover most of your minority diet needs

at the same time. But Bristol is just down the M5 and is much easier.

=== Questions for fun ===

>

> 8/ Which is your favourite type of bean?

Soya beans, but that's because you get other stuff made of them. Butter

beans are tasty too

9/ What is your favourite country, or region, to visit?

Australia (I'm half Aussie)

10/ What types of film do you like?

Anything except american " comedy "

11/ What was the last meal you ate?

Breakfast - muesli and a drink somewhere between juice and a smoothie made

from peaches, pears and apple juice.

12/ Are you a morning, evening or night person?

Evening.

Hi Gayalondiel,

Welcome to the list (ha, looks like I beat the others to it for a change!).

Is your gamertag an Elven one by any chance? Sounds rather Tolkienesque...

I hail from Gloucestershire too - are you anywhere near Stroud? If so, Star

Anise serves a vegan menu on Friday and Saturday nights. There is also a

vegan group for the three counties, but they meet up in Malvern, which is a

bit of a way to go.

Hi John,

It is a Tolkienesque name - not from the books, but barstardised together

from words in the Sindarin language. I got it way back out of an Elvish

Name Generator - it means something about a fell harbour or haven, which I

thought sounded nice and spooky. Because it's unique, though, I get to use

it on every website I frequent.

I am near enough to Stroud, being in Chelt but on the Leckhampton side, so

it's not hard to get there. I've never tried the Star Anise, though, but

I'll get over there and give it a try at some point! The Malvern group

sounds nice but I already travel too far on a regular basis, so I don't

imagine I'll make it that far. Although I guess a local group would be

nice... well, we'll see.

Hi Gaya,

Yep, Gaya means awe or dread, and Lond harbour or haven. But if memory

serves, when nouns are strung together to form a word, something like 'of'

or 'of the' is implied. So Gayalond(iel) would perhaps be 'fearful awe of

the haven'. Which personally I'd be tempted to interpret as the mixed

emotions many elves in the Third Age seemed to have regarding the sea,

evoking as it did (and as I'm sure you know!) a desire to journey west

whilst they also loved the lands of Middle-earth and were reluctant to

leave. So taken symbolically, perhaps your name could almost mean a longing

for unknown beauty and peace.

Hmm. Guess who else is a bit of a Tolkien geek? (It's my job though, in case

that counts as an excuse!)
