Guest guest
Hello, everyone, It looks like I'm one of many newcomers. My name's Emma, I'm 48, and I know very few vegans in real life, despite having been vegan for 23 years, and vegetarian for 24. I certainly don't have any close vegan friends, and my partner is an ex-vegetarian fish-eater. I became a vegetarian after reading Colin Spencer's articles in the Guardian about what happens in abattoirs (anyone else remember them?). I turned vegan after having a discussion with my father about how inconsistent my vegetarianism was. My dad had worked on a farm when he was younger, and he told me about how the cows used to low pitifully after their calves had been taken away. He was rather taken aback when he realised that he'd pushed me into veganism! Eventually, though, he and my mother both became vegetarians. My dad even tried briefly to go vegan, but it's a tough thing to start when you're in your sixties or seventies. I live in southwest London, which is probably as good a place to be a vegan as you can get. To Sarah, who asked about restaurants in London, I can recommend 222 in West Kensington <http://www.222veggievegan.com/>, Blah Blah Blah in Shepherd's Bush, and the Gate in Hammersmith <http://www.thegate.tv/>, in that order. Perhaps not very helpful if you're coming from Bedfordshire, but I'm afraid I don't go north much! I don't have a favourite bean; I just like to vary them a lot. The last meal I ate was homemade muesli with cacao nibs, banana, mango and soya yoghurt. And I'm not a morning, evening or night person. I'm an afternoon person; I'm at my peak around ... lunchtime. And I can't remember quite how I found this list. But it was probably a result of searching for something positive after all the negative press attention that veganism has been getting lately. I think I felt the need for a little solidarity. Emma
