Guest guest
MP SLAMS HERBAL ESSENCES OVER 'MISLEADING' ANIMAL TESTING CLAIMS Liberal Democrat MP Mike Hancock (Portsmouth South) is urging consumers to boycott Herbal Essences, following Uncaged’s exposure of the cruel animal experiments performed for the shampoo brand by its parent company, Procter & Gamble (P & G). In an article quoted by Portsmouth paper 'The News’, he said: " The media have been inundated with half-truths about P & G. It is now time for a campaign to force P & G to be more honest and really stop testing their products on animals. I don’t believe that the vast majority of people want cosmetics tested unnecessarily on animals. And it is clear from their actions so far that Procter and Gamble will only listen if consumers stop buying their products – and hit them where it hurts on their bottom line. " Mike Hancock has tabled an Early Day Motion (No. 1279 ‘Animal Testing of Cosmetics’) in the House of Commons which asserts that animal testing for cosmetics is “morally unacceptable†and applauds Uncaged’s ‘Boycott Procter & Gamble’ campaign. EDM 1279 also highlights the confusion that exists around the animal testing of cosmetics, and calls for information on animal testing for cosmetics to be more accessible. As the Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said in a recent parliamentary debate, “the average person on the street does not want to buy products that have been tested on animals, but that information simply is not availableâ€. The Government claims that local trading standards departments can be contacted for information on animal testing for specific products, but the departments we’ve spoken to have told us that they are “constrained by various legislation†and cannot give out such information. EDM 1279 calls for the law to be clarified or changed so members of the public can access information about cosmetics companies’ animal testing so they can make an informed choice about what they buy. So far, 107 MPs have signed EDM 1279. To lobby your MP to do so, or to sign any of the other EDMs endorsed by Uncaged, please visit the Protecting Animals in Democracy site at www.vote4animals.org.uk .
