For November I'm organising a vegan gala evening in Manchester. I'm trying so

hard to generate interest. If anyone is keen here is the low down -

Sat 7th November at The Whitworth Art Galley 7-11pm. Includes a wine reception,

3 course meal and live entertainment throughout. Tickets are £25 but there is a

disocunt of 10% on full table bookings. The money is going to my local RSPCA who

are a separate charity from national RSPCA and are run by veggies and vegans and

don't endorse Freedom Foods - cos it's just so wrong, and do not euthanize

animals just cos know one wnats them.

If anyone can help spread the word I have fab posters in df format too. Many

thanks, Susie. (email:steve.susie)

Does the regular RSPCA put animals down if they can't find them homes then??? I

thought all the animal rehoming places in this country had done away with that

now. How awful!!

It is common practice for animals to be put to sleep if there is nowhere for

them to go - it's just a very sad fact that there isn't enough spaces for all

the animals in need. The RSPCA does not hide this fact as it feels people should

be aware of what humankind are doing to these poor creatures. It is not unique

to the RSPCA either. The Dogs Trust have issued these figures last week:

2009 stray and pts figures:

2008 - 6710 pts.

2009 - 9310 pts.

That is only to date so far this year. These figures are culminated from local

authority pounds and sadly only around 60% comply with the figures so in reality

the number could be almost double.

Considering this is ONLY stray figures from local authorities and no other

outlets it makes pretty depressing reading.

http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/press_office/pressreleases/2009/stray2009.htm

At our branch we have the policy of not putting animals to sleep just cos we

can't home them, but you'll find many other charities tat do. But it's never an

easy decision to make in our case me and the staff just keep the animals!

I only lurk on these pages, but feel the need to speak now!

I worked at an RSPCA Animal Centre and only left because the money was so poor

but have regretted it ever since.

The centres are either run as, what I can only describe as, a franchise or are

funded by Head Office. I worked for a HO funded one, and at no time did we put

an animal to sleep because we couldn't find a home for it. In fact, some dogs

went slightly 'kennel mad' through the sheer frustration of being in kennels for

so long.

It may be different at other centres, but our policy was never to euthanise

based on not being re-homed, and I was very proud to work there.

I'm really pleased to here that. I work closely with the Inspectors with the

admission of animals and their job is constantly frustrated by the fact they

rescue animals but then have nowhere for them to go. They sometimes have no

choice but to put to sleep healthy animals cos there's nowhere for them. I truly

hope that few places put animals to sleep once they have found somewhere to be

cared for.

Hi Donna

Thanks so much for asking. It's shaping up to be a really good night with some

fantastic food and entertainment. If you know The Eighth Day Co-operative they

are the ones doing the catering for us and they do amazing vegan food, and Bute

Islands foods are supplying us with loads of stuff to do canopes too!

To book tickets all you need to do is send a cheque made payable to 'RSPCA

Manchester & Salford' for 2 tickets (£25 each) then I will send you them out

asap with a receipt/bokking confirmation. The address to send to is:

Susie Hughes, 565 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, Manchester, M21 0AE

I can send you a poster for the event or you can also check it out at

www.rspcamcrsalford.blogspot.com or at www.veganmonth.com

Best wishes and thank you!

xSusie

How awful. Makes me wish I had a mansion just so I'd have room to rehome

more than just the couple of second hand pets I already have.
