Guest guest
> ---------- > Jo[sMTP:Heartwork] > > Did you enjoy your celebrations? > Hi Jo - yes I did, hugely, thank you. We spent Christmas Day at home alone, just Steve, me and the cats, playing with our new toys (well we, played with ours, the cats spat and rolled on their catnip parcels. Still, they seemed to enjoy it.) Basically we vegged out (in both senses of the word) and recharged for the year ahead. The Christmas break always seems to me like time out of reality. The summer holiday is very much business as usual for everyone else, so has no feeling of specialness, whereas at Christmas life seems to pause. I love the whole deal, though I'm not in the least religious. Cathy

It is more restful, and does feel special - I think it is because it's in the middle of winter, when you really need a break. Jo --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
Down here in Texas...Tamales are the traditional Hispanic Xmas Eve supper. My Mexican stepmom's family would make about 200 every xmas and we had a wonderful feast. There are some wonderful veggie tamale recipes on the web, I myself am going to make several dozen assorted. Just hit veggie tamales in a search engine. Also, I saw an episode of Regina's Vegetarian Table in which she made some. If you go to PBS.org and search for her show, then search through the episode archives...Or enter it into her search, you'll find it. GOod luck! Guest guest
Allison, any chance you would want to post one of your favorites? I am fairly new to this vegetarian lifestyle, love tamales, and would love to know one of your favorites veggie tamale recipes! Phillip I myself am going to make several dozen assorted. Guest guest
I haven't made any veggie tamales yet but am going to this Xmas. The only tamales I've had were meat (and thousands of them)...And my stepfamily, being traditionalists, would buy an entire cow head and use that as the meat. Us grandkids would sit around spreading masa on the shells. Something that is fun for the younger crew. Anyway, this is the site I'm using for recipes...The chipotle sounds divine! http://www.expage.com/jennskitchen Here is Regina's recipe featured on her show http://www.pbs.org/regina/recipes2/series_600/e602r.htm#Vegetable I'm sure you'll find more if these don't interest you. The wonderful thing about tamales is their versatility...They can either be finger foods or entree. And of course, smothered in chile con queso or homemade garden salsa is...well, scrumtious:) Warmly, Allison --- Phillip Schoenfeld <schoney wrote: > Allison, any chance you would want to post one of > your favorites? Guest guest
So, being a newbie Vegan, what's been on my mind lately is, what shall I eat for my Christmas dinner!!! For me, this year I will be alone on Christmas day so I can please myself, as my other half is not a Vegan or Vegetarian lol, but wondered what all of you guys were having. I haven't tried a nut roast before BUT I am already so sick and tired of ever only seeing a nut roast option on menus as a vegetarian alternative that I feel I don't even want to try it!! Reading some of the American sites they have all sorts of faux turkey etc (sounds a bit weird) and I'm not even sure if they sell that sort of stuff here. So what are you all having, and how many of you will be the only Vegans sitting at the table?
Guest guest
If you want to try faux turkey then you can get the American Tofurkey roast in some shops in the UK (they have had them in Infinity Foods in Brighton the past 2 - 3 years). It comes with gravy and various other bits and pieces and is quite expensive - it's big enough for about 4 people though. Guest guest
Hmm, where to begin! lol. It depends on what you're in the mood for, really. If you want a " traditional " style Christmas dinner (which is what I normally have but am lucky enough to have someone else cook it!)then you can have all the usual traditional vegetables and for the " meat " bit a vegan alternative. Someone mentioned an American one, or Redwoods do some " Cheatin' Roasts " . I think they started off as a " Celebration " turkey style for Christmas, but they do two or three now, plus stuffing and gravy. http://www.redwoodfoods.co.uk Things like that you should be able to find in health food shops. If they don't stock them then they can probably order them in for you, though this time of year they tend to sell out fast. I can't comment on how realistic they taste, as I don't know what meat tastes like, but I think they're yummy and my non-veg boyfriend likes them too. If you're not looking for a traditional style meal, then the options are endless! , " shine_nicola " <nshine711 wrote: > > So, being a newbie Vegan, what's been on my mind lately is, what shall I eat for my Christmas dinner!!! Guest guest
Hi Nic, Here in OZ, we have our 'traditional' roast on Christmas Eve. As this is the first Christmas for me as well I thought I'd just go with the veggies. I buy a really nice schnitzel which I'll probably throw in the oven. Then on Christmas Day we have friends over for cold meat and salad (as it's usually stinking hot on Chrissie Day). So I'll probably make up a whole bunch of different salads as I'll be the only vegan here! Best, Lee , " shine_nicola " <nshine711 wrote: > > What does it taste like? Guest guest
Hey This year I've decided to make a layered squash, barley and spinach pie. Fingers crossed itll turn out ok (http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/8639/layered-squash-barley-and-spinach-pie). Don't know if I fancy the idea of fake turkey. My boyfriend said he'd spotted fake duck the other day and was going to cook me something with it but the idea of it just turns my stomach in the first place. Sure it's quite nice really though. Just google vegan recipes and see if anything takes your fancy...theres quite a lot of things out there if you don't mind making it yourself. Guest guest
Well I like it (a lot) but I know not everyone likes fake meats etc. It's made form seitan (wheat gluten) and it is pretty good - tasty without being too similar to the real thing. The extras that you get with it (gravy, dumplings, etc are OK but not that exciting). They may have some other (possibly smaller/cheaper) roast type things in the tall freezer cabinets in Infinity - check the ingredients though as not all of them are vegan. Guest guest
Hi Lee You can get vegan soft cheese over here, Toffutti do one and Pure have recently brought one out so I'm going to use that instead. I'll probably just use more of that to substitute for the ricotta. The soft cheeses also make a good cheesecake if you mix it with some soy milk and melted chocolate - so easy to make and absolutely delicious:) Donna lee1963 Wed, 25 Nov 2009 22:35:02 +0000 Re: Christmas Hi Donna, This looks really nice. Guest guest
I'm sure you'll find somewhere eventually, just got to keep looking. We're very lucky over here as now most of the main supermarkets stock some vegan foods and ingredients. Plus they're getting a better with their labelling of food so you don't have to trawl through the ingredients list. My pet peeve though is companies deciding to add milk products to their foods for absolutely no reason and not letting you know about it beforehand. I was eating something the other day that was previously vegan and due to boredom started reading the ingredients only to see they had decided to add whey powder to it! Needless to say I stopped eating it pretty sharpish, thankfully no one was around to see my reaction! lol Tell you what, we'll do a swap...you can come and live over here and I'll come sun myself down there:D take care Donna lee1963 Fri, 27 Nov 2009 06:10:43 +0000 Re: Christmas Sounds yummy Donna. Guest guest
Hey Donna, I'm sure I'll be able to hunt out stuff when I get a bit more time. There are a couple of online shops I can buy from but it's hard to tell what the products are like! Dont worry, I have done the same thing with reading stuff while eating it and then nearly throwing up knowing it had animal product in there.'Lets hope as time goes by manufacturers will be kinder to us! No worries about swapping houses but I think you'll have to get in line behind Paul, cause he offered first lol. By the way, how is the weather there lately? My pet peeve though is companies deciding to add milk products to their foods for absolutely no reason and not letting you know about it beforehand. I was eating something the other day that was previously vegan and due to boredom started reading the ingredients only to see they had decided to add whey powder to it! Needless to say I stopped eating it pretty sharpish, thankfully no one was around to see my reaction! lol > > > > Tell you what, we'll do a swap...you can come and live over here and I'll come sun myself down there:D > > > > take care > > Donna > > > > lee1963 > Fri, 27 Nov 2009 06:10:43 +0000 > Re: Christmas > > > > > > Sounds yummy Donna. Guest guest
Yeah, that's the problem with buying online - it's hit and miss when you haven't tried the products before. I was a bit slow there, will have to hope he changes his mind:) The weather is horrible at the moment, windy, rainy and cold:( Looking forward to the summer already, but then even that probably won't be fantastic. I've been told we're forecast snow for Sunday evening though which would be nice. I'm off to France tomorrow for a day trip and was hoping that it'd be nicer there but just looked at forecast and apparently it's heavy rain there as well, better make sure I pack my brolly! lee1963 Fri, 27 Nov 2009 08:19:15 +0000 Re: Christmas Hey Donna, I'm sure I'll be able to hunt out stuff when I get a bit more time. Guest guest
Hiya Donna, How was France? Hope the weather was a bit better for you Yeh, I think I'm going to have do a lot more hunting for shops here. You would think a city the size of Sydney would have quite a few veggie/vegan shops! There is one about and hour and a half away but I don't really feel like packing lunch and taking a compass to find it! Think I'll try the online shop and see how it goes. Guest guest
Hey Lee, were you born and bred in OZ? I can't imagine what Christmas day is like in the height of Summer lol. I will be moving to Melbourne in about 5 years so should start getting my head around the idea. I expected Australia to be a bit more open to Veganism only because you all seem slightly more health conscious than the UK, but from what you say, maybe that's not the case. Lets hope things start to change. I am not opposed to shopping on line for stuff, but I don't like the price hike for the privilege, nor the price hike in specialist shops. Why can't the main stream shops just stock it all too and make our lives easier, plus give those that perhaps live in ignorance regards meat and animal cruelty a bit of insight and choice!! , " Lee " <lee1963 wrote: > > Hi Nic, > > Here in OZ, we have our 'traditional' roast on Christmas Eve. > > Best, > Lee > > , " shine_nicola " <nshine711@> wrote: > > > > What does it taste like? Guest guest
Hiya Nic, I was born and bred in OZ, so I can't imagine it not being hot for Chrissie lol. All my hubby's relatives are still in the UK and I would love to spend a cold Christmas over there one year. I agree with shopping online and how the price is bumped up, but until I can find somewhere to get stuff from, that's going to be the go. At least one online shop I found has a mock turkey which might be good for Christmas. I guess it's just a matter of trying to different things and see what they taste like. How come you'll be moving to OZ? And why Melbourne lol Best, Lee , " shine_nicola " <nshine711 wrote: > > Hey Lee, > > were you born and bred in OZ?
