Y'know, I like that smell too. Nice to meet someone else who does. My first few Rutgers and cherry tomatoes are starting to come in, and I have mustard greens, peppers and a few _edamame_ soybeans nearly ready (plus herbs and cutflowers, of course. It isn't summer without zinnias, basil and borage.) The corn's nowhere near ready. And that's all I got planted this year, what with all that was going on. Way less than usual, or than I planned. >neighbours who will complain seeing it. Do they need to know what it is? Not helpful, no. :-) But don't you keep it covered? > I read the other day that for a certain time it was even very > fashionable to eat only canned vegetables. Not exactly fashionable; it was just that they're convenient and cheap, and people had been convinced they were as good nutritionally as fresh produce. Poor people still eat a lot of canned goods because they're cheap; my dinner tonight will be out of cans, 'cause it's the end of the month, and because the garden isn't at full production. I'll be having canned stewed tomatoes, chickpeas and hominy, and feel lucky to have 'em; if freinds hadn't helped a little, I wouldn't have. > I wouldn't want to know what they looked like 25 years ago! Guest guest
Sitting here laughing into my green tea - thanks, Rain! Ah, your garden sounds wonderful to me (all green fingers crossed) and yes, compost covered or not, one of our cats gets into everything that is closed ... cupboards, boxes... Pulses and tomatoes out of cans are all right by the way... you are not alone facing the end of the month, but some things like carrots (especially them) are not the real thing. Yes, I meant indeed the veggies, not the people (don't make me sob by looking at pictures of myself 25 years ago) And talking about odours and smells other than leaves, moist earth, the smell of the sea after the rain, baby skin, garlic, cinnamon, curry....raw quinces smell lovely as well and spread a wonderful scent all over the room. This is my sensual day...I'll be back with recipes to provoke your nose as well as your taste buds.
