" It's difficult to say what percentage of Jews are vegetarian in the United

States, but [Richard] Schwartz [president of the Jewish Vegetarians of North

America since 1979] acknowledges it is not a large group. Phone calls this

week to several Bay area synagogues, community centers, restaurants and

delicatessens produced no other names. Even officials with Tampa Bay

Vegetarians, a group that meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, were

stumped. " We don't really look at our members that way, " one said.

 

Rabbi Joel S. Wasser of Congregation Kol Ami in Tampa said he does know some

Jewish vegetarians, and as a general rule, they do not use a shank bone in

their Passover observances. "
