Did anyone know that you can see Vegan doctors?! this is great! you

can get hold of a list from the Vegan Society.

Can anyone help with an issue I was discussing with my dad. I was

saying that we should avoid all medical-type drugs because they will

all have been tested on animals at some point. He argued that things

like asprin have been around for ages and won't be tested any more so

we can take them. I think he's wrong and that they are still

tested. Can anyone point me in the direction of some proof?!

Thanks!

H.

Hi,

Personally I do not take any 'drug'. But I was lucky to live in Hull where there is a practitioner who deals with non-animal homeopathic alternatives. If you go to: www.vaccinfo.karoo.net this site gives you tonnes of information regarding vaccinations etc. Though the actual 'drug' like aspirin may not be tested on animals anymore, a lot of these products contain animal ingredients and other strange things which naturally must be bad for our bodies as it is foreign

i.e. you may have heard in the news today about polio. Also Haemophilus Influenza B contains HiB saccharides cultured on cows brains and linked with CJD and banned in some countries. I know these are vaccinations I have used as examples, but it is no different for medicine either.

I suppose it is fine me saying this as I do not get ill...(prevention being the best thing). When I do suffer with headaches (which is usually due to too much caffeine, sitting in front of the pc for too long etc) I just get fresh air. I do suffer though from severe period pains (sorry to you men out there for bringing this up) but I deal with it without medicine.

This is my point of view, and I am sure there are vegans out there who need to take some kind of medicine for whatever reasons.

Anyway, I've waffled on enough for now.

Hi Karen,

I feel much the same as you about medicine and use herbal preparations for colds in the winter etc. though since going vegan weve all been very healthy anyway. I also used to suffer severe monthly pain prior to being vegan. I know there are herbs that can help with this and also flower remedies can have a balancing effect on our female bits and pieces. It might be worth seeing a herbalist if you feel so inclined.

Hello Lucy,

Thank you for the advice, I have just moved to Wakefield and finding it very hard to find places suitable for vegans (I can't even find a Holland and Barrett). I think I will pop back to my home town to see the herbalist there. I need to get it sorted as it has been going on for a while now, I do not have much faith in traditional doctors. It seemed to have started when I turned vegan and I suffer in silence with it, because people are just waiting to condemn me when I suffer with minor ailments so they can blame it on my vegan diet. I am always telling them that I don't catch the '24 hour bug' or colds like everyone else because I am in such good health being vegan.

I agree with you regarding an improvement in health when switching to veganism. I was always in good health prior to turning vegan, but even better health now.

Karen

Hi All

Sorry I've not been in touch for a while - I'm not very well at the moment -

thought this might be an appropriate subject for me to add my two pennies

to!

The question of Vegan medicine for me works on two levels - we need to know

that the medicines we are being given do not include stuff from an animal

however the fact is that most if not all of the conventional drug companies

are all involved in animal testing - a lot of the well known ones have

strong links with HLS (eg. SmithKline, Glaxo, Pfizer etc

I am currently seeing a homeopath as I suffer from depression and anxiety

related problems - I was on anti-depressants made by SmithKline Beecham for

over two years however weaned myself off them

This has been partly due to the fact that I felt the drugs were quite toxic,

causing weight gain, the sweats, dull looking eyes and the need to sleep

for, on average, 12 hours a day. And partly due to the fact that I want

NOTHING to do with a company that invests in such shameless suffering and

cruelty

I have been seeing the homeopath for a month and am VERY optimistic

The only difficulty has been that, sometimes, homeopathic medicine can

excacerbate the current symptons before they go away

Generally this is seen as a good sign as it means the medicine is working at

a deeper level

When you consider that one in 6 patients in hospital are there because of

the treatment they have taken and 40% of patients suffer side effects as a

result of prescription treatment it makes you think.....

The only sad thing about alternative medicine is that often one has to pay

quite a lot of money in order to get the treatment although my understanding

is that people can be referred by their GPs to a Registered Homeopath

(RSHom) if the GP is a fund holder of their surgery (or something like

that!) Worth checking out....

The medicine issue is such a difficult one isn't it? I'm fairly

healthy too and never take any antibiotics or anything. I really

hope that if I ever get really ill I will have the strength to refuse

any 'conventional' medicines and opt for the alternatives instead.

The trouble is it is so easy to say that now when I'm healthy. I

have no idea how it would feel to have a really bad illness and I

should imagine the survival instinct kicks in pretty strongly. But

how do you justify taking one or several lives to keep your own? I

like to think that we all have a pathway in life and that when our

time comes our time comes and we shouldn't be 'kept' alive. But I

reckon it would take a huge strength of character to refuse some

treatment that could give you another ten years or so. I'm going to

make a real effort to look after my body from now on! Has anyone

ever considered a raw food diet btw?

....did anyone see that sick program where the bloke got a dead man's

hand attached to his wrist. Gross! They were talking about using

new techniques of taking some part of a pig foetus's brain out and

putting it into a human brain. How screwed-up is that!! Plus if it

wasn't hard enough already to convince these nasty scientists that

animals count, they've also been using human foetuses! scary, scary

stuff.
