I met my husband Paul through Young Vegetarians and London Vegans, sort of met at both groups around the same time. YV is now sadly defunct, George Pinnell and everyone else just got older and no-one else took over. We don't get to so many evening events these days, since having children, but if the group organised an event on a weekend daytime, something for all ages, we would try to make it. We live in Harrow, and I am starting to feel better since kicking most of the junk food out of my diet and joining Weight Watchers. I became vegan for ethical reasons in 1984, but I was always a junk fooder. I first went vegetarian in 1981, because I had objected to my friends dissecting animals in biology A-level classes, and someone pointed out that I was a hypocrite for eating animals. I couldn't disagree with that accusation, so that was the end of eating meat and fish for me. Even if the other students didn't agree with me, at least I could prove I was not content to continue being a hypocrite. I used to be fairly active in animal rights groups, and intend to be more active again when the children are older. I am seeking some local real life vegan, or at least vegetarian, friends. They certainly don't have to be parents, but they would have to be reasonably family-friendly. Another vegan family very near to us with kids of similar age, or a substitute granny type person for ours, are what we are ideally seeking. We are still relying on a meat- eater to babysit when we go out occasionally and that is not ideal, although she respects our views, it's not the same as actually sharing them. I believe strongly that vegans should support one another very much on a local level, creating a sense of community between vegans, so that none of us become isolated.
