Guest guest
I have considered being a vegan of and on. My main motive is health reasons. Hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and cancer run rampant in my family. I believe I can avoid many of these problems by avoiding certain foods. I am also into the natural thing. A few months ago I chopped all of my hair off so that it could be chemical free. I am very concerned about the genetic engineering going on in animals. That is not natural. I want to stay away from anything that has been tampered with. My problem is getting started. My family has southern tendencies, so I am used to pork chops, cube steaks, tuna salad, ham hocks and greens. . . you get the point. What in the world do vegans eat? Goodness, my favorite food is mac and cheese! (Giving that up seems impossible!) What keeps you motivated? Another problem with getting started right now is that I just went grocery shopping and of course my cart was loaded with meat. I feel like I must finish off all of that food before I get started. I don't have money to waste. There is no need to go on and on. I am sure you get the point. I would appreciate any ideas and tips! Guest guest
Great to hear you want to go vegan - you won't regret it at all! Me and my family have definately had lots of health benefits from becoming vegan. There is a lot of literature from vegan organisations to help you in becoming vegan. I know that an organisation called Viva do an 'L-plate Vegan' guide which you can get from them. I don't have their number with me but I'll let you know on Monday. I'm sure they will have a website but I'm not sure of that either! Otherwise try looking at the Vegan Society website at http://www.vegansociety.co.uk They'll be glad to give you some help. It may seem a little difficult at first, especially getting used to what you can and can't buy, but stick at it and within no time it will be as easy as your diet is now and you won't experience any difficulty. A lot of people think it would be difficult but its only getting used to the change that's tricky - being vegan's easy once you know how! Best thing is to take your time. Your body needs to adapt to a new diet and you also need to give yourself time to get used to buying new foods, making different meals etc. Give yourself an aim of say six months or something to make it easier. I'm sure everyone here would be more than happy to help too! Ask any questions you like! Whereabouts do you live as we have been meeting up for some vegan meals in London. You are more than welcome to come along to the next one, eat some yummy food and ask us all about being vegan. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy all the tasty new food! take care, Hayley. vegan-network , darceylaury@h... wrote: > I have considered being a vegan of and on. Guest guest
Just to add to the good advice already given - there is a really good vegan recipe site with 'cheesy' things on it - I seem to remember a version of mac and cheese - http://www.veganmania.com If not I will post up a creamy pasta recipe which is great! Guest guest
Darcey, thanks for your honest spirit of inquisitiveness!....i have been a "steak-n-taters" kind of guy my entire life.........i became a vegan about 3 months ago having never even dabbled with vegetarianism.....i am living proof that anyone can easily become vegan....many suggest a gradual change to becoming vegetarian first and then slowly dropping dairy and eggs.....my only advice as a newcomer is to know why you are making the change...if you have a strong enough "why", then the "how" will never be a problem.....so in answer to the question of motivation; i am vegan because it is the healthiest diet for my being, i am not taking part in the horrendous torture and murder of any sentient beings, i am preserving our environment and natural resources so that our children will have a more promising future, and i am becoming more socially responsible as to vital issues such as genetically engineered foods.....in a nutshell, you will have so many more choices of foods that you have never imagined, a new sense of creativity will enter your kitchen, an almost eerie overall state of well being will flood your soul, and you will feel a bit superior....i am struggling with the superiority part as it is not something that i intended...all in all, being a vegan is great fun and you instantly gain a worldwide group of friends that have the same concerns as yourself...i am really happy that i have changed...you will be too!!!!!.............check out http://www.notmilk.com and also http://vegsource.com sincerely, rick (soyboy) - darceylaury Friday, December 01, 2000 8:23 AM vegan-network Considering. . .
