Guest guest
Well, you asked for support of a sort. i would like to offer this for inclusion to the network website. may be it could be sent out with the first welcome email and a URL to it put on each digest or mail sent. i am quite happy for it to be added to or edited but think it stands pretty well as a guideline. regards, john Netiquette for mail list rs There are informal rules of the internet which are termed netiquette to help people use proper etiquette within this form of communication. Some examples of poor netiquette are not signing messages, unsubscribing to the posting address instead of the administrative address, or TYPING IN ALL CAPS (which is considered yelling). This is a dynamic environment and netiquette is changing rapidly. I can't say it much better than this: " ...my goal here is to educate people who participate in mailing lists, since only by improving our list manners will mailing lists continue to become increasingly pleasant and useful. " (Adam C. Engst, TidBITS #480.) Some informal rules for the Low End Mac family of mail lists: 1. Remember that replies automatically go to the list, not the just the person who posted the message. You need to change the " to: " address to respond to an individual. 2. Never send attachments to the list. An attachment may contain a virus, may be in a format others cannot use, may not make it through some mail gateways, makes the message bigger, and will bog down both the list server and the mail server. € Many of today's email programs send styled text attachments by default. You must turn HTML and other styled text off to post to the list (see #3). € Instead of sending an attachment to the list, offer to email it directly to those who request it. 3. Don't send styled text or HTML files, just plain text. This may or may not come through as an attachment, but styled text is very difficult to read in a normal mail client. Styled text is especially troublesome in digests. 4. Style your posting -- ASCII style. € Put a blank line between paragraphs. € Put a blank line between what you are quoting and what you are writing. € Clearly mark quoted sections. Most email programs do this by putting " > " or " > " in front of each line of quoted material. 5. Don't use PGP encryption on your messages. A lot of people (probably most) won't be able to read your postings. 6. Please quote only the relevant portion of messages you respond to -- and please quote some of the original message so others know what you're responding to. " You shouldn't have to wade through gobs of extraneous stuff to get to the meat of the message. You should include just enough to provide a context for the message and no more. (One expert gives the rule of thumb that at least half of the lines in an email message should be your own.) If you *must* include the whole message that you are replying to, include it after your response. " (From " A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email " , Kaitlin Duck Sherwood <ducky <http://www.webfoot.com/advice/email.top.html>.) " Quoting sparingly does require manual work, since most email programs automatically quote the original message in replies. But failing to edit the original wastes everyone's time and bandwidth. " (Adam C. Engst, TidBITS #480.) 7. Please keep " me too " messages off the list; these are best sent privately, if at all. 8. Let sleeping threads lie. If it's been over a week since the last posting in a thread, consider it dead and buried. 9. When asking a question, please include all relevant information that would help someone else answer the email. Not everyone is psychic. 10. Change the subject line when the subject of the thread changes. 11. When responding to a digest post, please change the subject to match that of the original message. 12. You can wander into other Vegan-related topics, but try to limit discussion to Vegan-related topics (politics, religion, drug use etc). 13. Signature lines € Please keep your signature concise. Six lines or less is best. € Many email clients wrap text at 80 characters, so check that your signature won't wrap badly because of this. € Taglines should be clearly separated from the body of the email. € Please dont choose a signature that is deliberately offensive or could be considerd provocative by way of exercising your right to the freedom of speech. Remember that the internet is a multi-national and multi-cultural, and different standards apply. 14. Although rs may offer services to the list or share an exceptional bargains they have discovered, explicitly commercial postings are prohibited. Any address or domain posting such will be blocked. 15. Items for sale on a personal basis are are acceptable. commercial sales or multi-level marketing is not. 16. Don't send , , or mode change messages to the list. Follow the instructions in the footer of each message to or change mode. If that doesn't work, contact <listmom. 17. Treat your list members as you wish to be treated. Address breaches of netiquette privately, not on the list. Assume the best, not the worst. € And please notify <listmom if things seem to be getting out of hand. 18. Swearing. Vegan Network is an open email list with members of all ages, creeds and sexes. Profanities are generally not acceptable as descriptive terms and specifically not acceptable whilst used directly at another member. 19. Unwanted abuse of personal emails address off line or for commercial or lobbying purposes will not be tolerated. Willful breaches of these rules will cause the removal of membership. Final decision lies with the list administrators. This list is a showcase to the world of what vegans are and how they relate with one another. Please remember that and consider others first.
