Nominations please!

My nominations are as follows (I'm naming two in each category)

Best places I have either lived or visited: London and Brighton

Worst places: My home town of Middlewich (Cheshire), and rural North

Wales, being precise I was living in the nurses home at Ysbyty Glan

Clwyd. I was a student nurse but didn't stay long, and they hated

vegans there.

All places are good places for being a vegan in :-)

However, if it is quantities of vegans one is after then the best

place to be, in the Summer of 2002 at least, could well be here in

Scotland: I see the 35th World Vegetarian Congress is to be held in

Edinburgh. (Toronto 2000, Melbourne 2004; www.ivu.org/congress/2002.)

My text editor tells me there were 22 occurrences of 'vegan' in last

year's programme of events: 7 days; 70-odd speakers; all meals vegan

including banquet. Not an insubstantial event by the looks. Has

anyone any reports of previous ones? (The last one in Britain was

1979.)

Edinburgh's pretty good anyway for food shopping and eating out; and

any city with a mountain in the middle can't be too bad. It's also

the home of the vegan haggis of course.

Leicester, where I'm moving shortly, has quite a few vegan places to eat.

Aberystwyth on the west coast of Wales, where I went to uni, has a lovely

place called the Treehouse which does organic food, a lot of it vegan, plus

a vegetarian place called Ancient Rain which was quite nice. Oxford has a

place which isn't too bad.

Hemel Hempstead, where I live at the moment, has to be the worst place I've

been - nothing for vegans at all even though it has a population of 80,000
