Guest guest
London has to be one of the best places in Europe. if you spread that question to where is the worst place in Europe, i would nominate Southern Germany. when i went there, it was pre-unification with East Europe, unlike in the UK where everyone eats meat and two veg, in Germany, it seemed to be meat and two meat. yes, what would sir like with that nice pork slab ... some sausage and venison perhaps? no, Turkey is even worse because everything is fried in lamb's fat and not even vegetables were safe. Urban Greece notmuch better. surprising amounts of meat and overcooked sludgy veg. Italy is great though. everything fried in virgin olive oil, lots of amazing salads and stuff like artichokes, asparagus, grilled peppers, even charcoal roasted crocus bulbs in more olive oil. pasta and polenta - all safe. the cooks i found were always considerate and concerned and on a number of ocassions would come out to see what was wrong with me and then put together something really special that was the envy of veryone at the table. i was touring with a band out there. i could probably trace a map of cool eating places right over Europe from Finland [ live food restaurant in Artic temperatures ?!? ] through France [ great macrobiotic restaurant in Paris ] down to the Meditarranean [ also great Macrobiotic centre in Milan ]. Edinburgh used to have the highest proportion of veg restaurants in Europe up until the 80s but i am sure that has changed now. Any of the big cities in America i have been to are great, serious sized portions. New York is a killer, vegan heaven, but outside of that forget it. you really feel like you are from another planet and it is just too depressing seeing mile and mile of burger bars. you could wander around a football pitched sized supermarket that took you an hour to drive to and find nothing to eat except corn chips. even the italian food there, i found, was awful in comparison to the real thing. i was so surprised. even in Little Italy. criticism from any Americans or Europeans out there welcome. john
