Guest guest
Dear Hannah, It is difficult to be a vegan in Portugal if you compare it to being a vegan in England. Only in Lisbon will you find more vegan stuff and even then... But the demand for such products is increasing and I'm sure that the future will be brighter. As for environmental organizations there are quite a few and I think they actually do some important things. Pro animal rights organizations are a different thing all togheter: they are very inconsistent, don't appear publicly and even when they do their tactics isn't the best one... they are very discredited around here. That's why I have a project of starting one by myself. I decide this some time ago when one day I called to one of those so called animal rights associations offering my help and the answer I got was: "you'll have to writte a letter to the president to see if she accepts you.". I think this is ludicrous. All volunteers should be more than welcomed as this movement is very weak in Portugal and it needs all the people that are willing to join. Well, but that's my opinion, I'll send you a list of contacts anyway. My best regards Joana Fisher - Hannah Biddle vegan-network Thursday, April 05, 2001 11:09 AM Re: about me Hello there. We are a vegan family of three (me, Dave, Jade - 17 months,) thinking of moving to Spain or Portugal in the next couple of years, to live in a sustainable community somewhere. Can you recommend and contacts of (dis) organisatins who work with co-operatives or environmental or animal rights issues in Portugal / Spain? Is it difficult being vegan in Portugal? We currently live on a boat in England - space is not a problem with our dog - so long as he has lots of walk he likes the comfort of a fairly small space. Hannah. - Thomas and Joana Fisher vegan-network Monday, April 02, 2001 5:29 PM about me Well, it looks like this is the thing to do now, so here it goes: Name: Joana Fisher Age: 23 Nationality: Portuguese Occupation: studying Law at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa Professional aspirations: to do an MA or Ph.D. on animal rights ( according to the Portuguese law, animals are objects!!!) I was vegetarian for 5 years and I've been a vegan for 5 months. I got married to Tom at the age of 21 and we have no children. Main interests: History books, piano, languages and ethics. I live in a tiny flat in Lisbon which I share with my husband and two dogs ( I'm sorry if this sounds shocking but I think our animals are very well treated). Favourite book: there are too many special books in my life Personal dream: to have a huge vegan family! My best regards Joana P:S- Sandra, thank you so much for the information on the vegan cheese. They don't sell over the internet but we are going to ask a shop to import it.
Guest guest
Hello again. Thankyou for your reply! Unfortunately, my computer would not download the contact list you sent - could you send it again? I'd be really interested to see what's out there. I think a lot of animal rights stuff has bad press and hidden agendas too - and the environmental stuff always seems to be more straightforward and gets a lot more respect - I think that both are important. I used to think animal liberation and rights issues were only important as part of the whole struggle against exploitation, but lately I have begun to see how important it is in its own right too.I'd be interested to hear more about your own project ideas. Regards, Hannah. > > Dear Hannah, > It is difficult to be a vegan in Portugal if you compare it to being a vegan in England.
