For tempeh you can buy it just once and then use it each time you need

you get a bag of starter culture which is enough to make about 15 lb of

tempeh. You use a teaspoon of starter culture each time you want to make a

litre 'block' and when you're not using it you need to keep it in an

airtight container in the fridge so that it cannot be 'contaminated'. As far

as I know it lasts for a very long time
