Guest guest
Hello everyone, WOW!! I have not had access to the internet for over a month, and it has taken me all day to read my 300 e-mail messages from the network. I've missed some good discussions and feel as though I have lost touch slightly. I'm having major ethical conflicts at the moment and having trouble tolerating a guy in my office who can not understand my veganism and has to make a big thing about it to everyone. It's great to be back on-line to be comforted by knowing that there are lots of vegans out there coping with society. <lol> --> Karen <--

You are not the one having the problem tolerating him, sounds like he is the one who has the problem of intolerance. Do you have a union? Someone you can put in a complaint about him to? You are suffering discrimination and harassment for your beliefs, that's just the same as sexism, racism, anti-semitism, etc, and it's no more something you should be expected to tolerate than you should be expected to tolerate racist or sexist remarks in the workplace. Put your complaint in this context in case your union has a problem understanding why this harassment is no joke. Look into the Human Rights Act, in this country we now have the right to be protected from religious/beliefs discrimination as well as sexism and racism. Your employers have a duty to protect you from such abuse. If you complain and they fail to act to stop this, you might be able to sue them. You could ask at the Citizens Advice Bureau what your rights are. Good luck, Lesley > > It's great to be back on-line to be comforted by knowing that there are lots of vegans out there coping with society. <lol> > > > > --> Karen <--

(The second biggest cancer killer). And tell him he'll get it but you biologically cannot. Then laugh, and walk away. >It's great to be back on-line to be comforted by knowing that there are lots of vegans out there coping with society. <lol> Andy > > >--> Karen <-- Andrew Barnes 07970 075905 -------------------- talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com

I think it is serious if it is upsetting Karen, but I'd say she should only go through the channel of official complaints if he has been clearly asked to stop, and still continues, he probably doesn't realise how offensive he is being. Some people are just so clueless and need it spelling out to them that they are being offensive about another person's beliefs or religion, so it might be worth giving him a chance to change his behaviour. Everyone else there is probably cringing at the insensitivity of this colleague.
