Guest guest
They have tried for years to do this with the Northern Ireland Police force (i.e. get a proportional representation of the population) However it isn`t as simple as the police doing a recruitment drive. In Ireland, Catholics simply did not want to join the Police force as they felt it did not represent them. I presume the same thing applies over here and because of the views on institutional racism you are unlikely to get equal proportional numbers of people applying. They have tried this with many institutions in Ireland, sometimes they produce figures to show they have achieved results. I`m not a believer in it. I think things must happen from the lowest level. That being peoples (real) attitudes being changed. Racism does not disappear because public bodies force people to button their lips or employ people they don`t want to. It disappears when people are taught AND integrated from an early age with people of different cultural backgrounds. Most Violence in N.Ireland stems from segregated communities with pinhole views of each other. Mixed areas rarely suffer. Anyway...the point is I suppose that we should all keep mixing and respecting " normal " people before we all become fascists....(I suspect it's already too late for some of us) MrBig > " Mccartney, Rowan (R.N.) Guest guest
If the police were less racist and oppressive then they might attract a more mixed bunch to their recruitment drives. I've only met one police man that was not in it for the adrenaline they got from the violence & power. (My Dad - he genuinely believed he could make the best of a bad job & turn it into something good & just.) All the others (including those who have forced their way into my home without a warrant, tried to beat me on the streets while pregnant for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, broken a friends arm and stolen her bag in front of me, raped another friend of mine, forced another disabled friend into the back of a van & removed his false legs & refused him insulin when going into a coma, taken another friend into a cell & beaten him nearly to death for smoking a spliff in his own home - and in each of these cases the police investigated themselves & found themselves innocent - and ofcourse my brother - who is a racist, facist bastard & is a polcieman too,) they have all have been dispicable people showing dispicable behaviour. What do you expect of a proffession whose role it is to protect the property of the middle and upper classes over the lives of ordinary people? They will attract people who get off on the violence. It does not suprise me that there are not many non-white people applying to be policemen. Have you seen the stop & search figures in recent years? It is hardly proportional. It is possible that things can change for the better. They have a long way to go. > They have tried for years to do this with the Northern Ireland Police force > (i.e. get a proportional representation of the population) > > However it isn`t as simple as the police doing a recruitment drive.
