Guest guest
Hey, I have a Citroen BX diesel, what would I have to have done to enable it to run on vegetable oil! Sounds crazy but interesting!!! Mark
Guest guest
So how's burning waste veggie oil, rather than dump it into landfill, I burn it in my diesel (you know, the engines that are designed to burn peanut oil). No dino-D there! And no added pollutants into the environment. DISCLAIMER don't go pouring oil without modifying your system, and never in a spark ignition engine. mr big [pervyempire] 10 May 2001 13:02 vegan-network Somewhere in the Suburbs One short journey in a car produces more toxins than a lifetime of spliffs. Guest guest
here's a start. http://biodiesel.infopop.net/2/OpenTopic/a/cfrm You can either react the oil to make BioDiesel or use the oil straight. Basically BioD requires less modification of the vehicle and more to the fuel. SVO (straight veggie oil) require more mods to the vehicle. It needs to be heated before combustion, normally done by running radiator coolant through a heat exchanger to heat the oil. You'll need to start and stop on " normal " diesel, or BioD. If you prefer not to mod the vehicle then you'll need to transesterfy the oil by mixing Methanol/Ethanol and Caustic soda then reacting this with the oil. I'd prefer the SVO option. The are quite a few people in the UK getting oil free from their local choppy, filtering it and driving very cheaply (or being good motorists and paying duty, if they were so inclined ;D). Guest guest
" So how's burning waste veggie oil, rather than dump it into land fill " Good for you mate! Pleased to see that you care! Global transport impacts on the environment seem to be a major contributor to greenhouse gases and other pollutants. I was just thinking though....if everyone started using waste veggie oil, there just wouldn't be enough to go round. I guess we'd then end up exploiting land from developing countries, which would result in a gazillion other impacts instead. Our world needs a radically rethink of global transport systems, and we need it now. With kind wishes Anastasia
Guest guest
I was thinking exactly the same thing on my way to work today...£3.50 of petrol I use every day for an 83 mile round trip. can`t afford the train. >anastasiastatham >vegan-network >vegan-network > Re: Dino-D >Thu, 10 May 2001 19:36:42 -0000 > > " So how's burning waste veggie oil, rather than dump it into land >fill " > >Good for you mate! Guest guest
Yes I've discussed this one with other veggie oil enthusiasts. The way our current society is set up it's only a stepping stone to a better alternative. I think it better to blend BioD with Dino-D; as they do in Germany in France, this has huge benefits for emotions and engine ware. You're right though, if all the waste veggie oil was refined into bioD it'd only service about 20% of all diesel vehicles on the road. Here's the thing. If all crops that are currently used for animal feeds were converted into high oil yielding crops like Canola (rape) or Soya, there'd be enough oil to match/drastically reduce fossil fuel use. America is the best example of that were 90 % of all crops go to animal feed. Of course, people would have to stop eating grain fed meat, they could still eat grass fed animal (if one were so inclined). When fossil fuel runs out I think people would rather give up meat than have no transport fuel. I for one will make sure I have a vehicle capable of burning different fuels. As for all those petrol heads, better start composting that biogas! Oh, and the 1st world already exploits the 3rd world for animal feed crops, so it can't exploit them any more. One just needs to look at Europe's mass import of food to see our current animal agriculture is unsustainable. Maybe there will be a good thing to come out of fossil fuel running out. anastasiastatham [anastasiastatham] 10 May 2001 20:37 vegan-network Re: Dino-D " So how's burning waste veggie oil, rather than dump it into land fill " Good for you mate! America I'd never though about that. Makes a lot of sense! What a fantastic solution.... It's a shame that this world is so screwed up that most people are so blind to the simple truth. > Oh, and the 1st world already exploits the 3rd world for animal feed crops, > so it can't exploit them any more. Oh I am sure the 3rd world could be exploited even more, probably by destroying anything good and natural that they have left completely. > Maybe there will be a good thing to come out of fossil fuel running out. Interesting idea. Maybe we'll have a miracle like that, ay!
Guest guest
a vespa is a really cool bike from the sixties and seventies - i wasn't born till the 80s but i know a smart bike when i see one! > Mr old and Big, you'll have to tell me what ancient car a Vespa is. >Is it spark ignition or compression ignition? > > Regards, > > Rowan McCartney > Undergraduate Placement Student > Electronic Throttle Control > Visteon ETS > Room GB-28/861 > Visteon Technical Centre > Laindon, Basildon, Essex > SS15 6EE, England. > > * +44-(0)1268-40-6212 > FordNet : 738-6212 > * Rmccar14 > > > >mr big [pervyempire] >10 May 2001 13:09 >vegan-network >Re: Dino-D > > >now thats a good idea....do you think I could modify my vespa? > > > " Mccartney, Rowan (R.N.)
