If it were piglets trapped on the ice floes (or a pig equivalent) I think they too would be being rescued. (There isn't a problem for the adult seals.) Farmed animals too can have appealing eyes and nice coats, as has been evident in the UK media of late; this is not in itself sufficient to stop them being eaten. Humans do feel duties to non-humans more often than is sometimes evident. Of course the feeling will often conflict with other interests or habits.
