Guest guest
What rubbish. As you are a woman (who are generally better at language skills) I'm not surprised at your statement. A similar statement: I think people who can spell just can't be bothered to rotate 3D images in their head, do technical drawings, read a map without physically rotating it. I've yet to meet a person who excels in both engineering and language. One offsets the other. What most teacher fail to realise is that the child who can't spell has other gifts they should be devolving, rather than spend a disproportionate time on perfecting something that isn't important to them anyhow. That's why 4 out of 121 engineering students on my course are female. Funny enough they also have a lot of 'male' traits to, like dyslexia. Sexism or not, males and females (not all) are biologically equip to solve different things. And as a side note, can people please remember that one day you'll have to meet the real people behind this list. Respect please. I think some people use dyslexia as an excuse 'cos they can't be bothered.{I'm not saying you do although you do deliberately spell Lesley's name incorrectly] Angie - " mr big " <pervyempire <vegan-network > Wednesday, May 09, 2001 9:55 AM Re: Politics > Ok Angie, so my spelling and grammar aren't`t brilliant. Guest guest
I agree completely Rowan. I struggle to understand why people have such difficulty with diversity. In my experience of Teachers at school and at a university with lot`s of (B'eds)) I have found them to be extremely slow in the lateral thinking department. MrBig >What rubbish. The gender effects for language skills and visuo-spatial abilities are reliable in populations only. The majority of variability in these skills is attributable to individual variations and not gender. In other words, your gender does not determine whether you will be better or worse in these areas than any other individual (be they male or female). Also, there is no evidence that language skills and logical reasoning / visuo-spatial ability / or whatever are mutually exclusive. There are many examples of high performance in both of these categories in many individuals. Goethe, Lady Ada Lovelace, Coleridge spring to mind, and there are many more examples. Guest guest
Are you saying Mr Big doesn't deliberately spell incorrectly? A lot of what he says is " tongue in cheek " .That's why we all love him!!! Angie Have I shown disrespect? I would expect someone to correct me if I write a factually incorrect statement.Otherwise how will I ever learn ? I'll go on passing incorrect information and end up looking stupid.I'm not too proud to be corrected - " Mccartney, Rowan (R.N.)
