Guest guest
Just a point of interest, there's no such thing as left handedness in Japan, it's the first I've heard about stuttering. Do you have any info that? -------- My mother's cousin was a natural left-hander forced to write with the right hand and he ended up with a stutter! This happened to many left-handers forced to use their right. I'm left-handed and it hasn't caused me any problems, my mother would have never allowed me to be forced to use my non-dominant hand. By the time I was in school the teachers had abandoned such cruel and outdated practices anyway.
Guest guest
> Just a point of interest, there's no such thing as left handedness in Japan, Left-handedness exists everywhere, it has always existed, at usually a rate of between 10 and 20% in most classes I was in at school (I used to notice these things because of my own left-handedness), but it is obviously a harmless difference which is still seen as a threat and being suppressed in Japan. They are very forceful about conformity there and it doesn't surprise me to hear that they probably force all children to write with their right hand. I believe it was the ancient Romans who used to kill people by throwing them off cliffs for being left-handed. Left-handed people were burned as witches in the 1600's. Persecution of the minority, the old story. > it's the first I've heard about stuttering. Do you have any info that? Difficult to prove but lots of anecdotal evidence. Some studies showed a correlation between forcing left-handers to use their right hand, and the development of stuttering. The violent treatment of these children in itself could well have contributed to the stuttering. http://duke.usask.ca/~elias/left/myths.htm I thought the fact that abusive treatment of left-handers used to go on was fairly common knowledge. Left-handedness is no more an illness to be cured than homosexuality! I did hear of some people who would only date people of the same handedness as themselves, but I think that's taking it a bit far. I can be a militant left-hander when I needs to be, but mostly it's not a problem. Guest guest
No, I didn't mean it really doesn't exist! I mean they don't allow it. I've not heard of stuttering and lefties forced to be righties, do you have that link? Maybe the Japanese don't stutter anyway, as they speak a language that's not prone to stuttering? Is stuttering just a west thing? That's like saying gay people don't exist, if the society is such that it believes they can be cured. Hopefully a few will stand up and fight this persecution of left- handers in Japan, it's very cruel to do this to children. > I've not heard of stuttering and lefties forced to be righties, do you have > that link? I think left-handedness is a bit more common than homosexuality actually. The link I gave before does have a bit on the stuttering and enforced right-handedness. Here is a link about a book about the whole subject of left- handedness, it probably covers all you wanted to know about left- handedness but were afraid to ask. http://www.stanleycoren.com/e_left-handed.htm My husband bought it for me once and I read some of it, must dig it out again sometime.
