Guest guest
Hi there, I play the Bassoon. It's made of wood..... Only some of the holes have padded keys, which I doubt (hope!) are animal glue. Although I drink from beer bottles that use animal glue to hold the sticker on (as they all do). The reed from wind instrument is made from reed and bound mechanically, not chemically. If you're worried about glue, ask them to use different glue when it's repaired. I'm sure most books are glued with animal glue. As far as I know, string instruments are held together with animal glue, and those that have bows have horsehair bows...Does anyone know of any alternatives? And what about other instruments, e.g. wind instruments? Despite a complete lack of musical ability, I had kind of hoped that one day I might find the time and the inclination to learn how to play something... Guest guest
I have a two guitars, a bass, lots of synths, drum machines, bongo's etc.....Everything was bought second hand. If there was a guitar in a second hand shop stuck with animal glue I would not have a problem buying it. The same I suppose could apply to leather? What does anyone else think? Should All Leather be burnt. I abstain from buying products because I believe that it creates the demand for a replacement. I don`t think the same about products in charity shops etc. MrBig > " Mccartney, Rowan (R.N.) Guest guest
I think it's okay for someone who eats meat to wear leather. But someone who doesn't, I think it's hypocritical. I think leather should be banned as fur is. If it were really a by-product, then I'd have no problem with it. The reality is that it's intensively treated. > Regards, > > Rowan McCartney > Undergraduate Placement Student > Electronic Throttle Control > Visteon ETS > Room GB-28/861 > Visteon Technical Centre > Laindon, Basildon, Essex > SS15 6EE, England. > > * +44-(0)1268-40-6212 > FordNet : 738-6212 > * Rmccar14 mr big [pervyempire] 15 May 2001 10:24 vegan-network RE: making music I have a two guitars, a bass, lots of synths, drum machines, bongo's etc.....Everything was bought second hand. Guest guest
My partner makes flamenco guitars for a living. There are two types of glue used: hide glue (traditional - from bones and skin,) & an irresversible glue made from plastics. Dave is a vegan but prefers to use the hide glue because when the wood in the instrument rots away to nothing in a few thousand years, the glue will rot away too. I think it is better to use something biodegradable and animal based, rather than something that will pollute the planet forever. At least it means all the animal is used up & not wasted. Same with second hand leather goods. Much more respectful to the animal I think to use it rather than to throw it away and encourage waste and capitalism by buying a non-degradable alternative. Which is probably made with amnimal extracts anyway. Hannah > I have a two guitars, a bass, lots of synths, drum machines, bongo's > etc.....Everything was bought second hand.
