Well it was a long time ago - I was a veritable dope head (grass and cannabis resin) for a while when away from home at college - from about age 16 -18. My boyfriend at the time convinced me of it's merits (it didn't live up to them) -I believe it was actually smoking pot along with tobacco that got me addicted to cigarettes (yes - the sordid past starting to come out now). All of it given up a long time ago now though, long before I was vegan or had children - old and sensible now :) though by no means straight edge.

With regard to the peta milk campaign - I was interviewed by a reporter from the Sunday Herald today for an article on veganism in Scotland. The peta thing was something she wanted my view on 'as a vegan'. I said it was good if they could get some true facts about milk into the public eye and sent her to the notmilk.com site. I'm not too sure how the article will turn out - I don't see it being as positive as the Scotsman one. She repeatedly asked me if it was very hard to be vegan for the children - about 3 times, kind of inferring that she had already decided it was. I don't know - the questions just seemed a bit geared. It should be in on Sunday so we will see then.

As for me, I'm just paranoid (especially about anti-vegan discrimination), even without drugs!I'm quite surprised you tried those nasty things, Lucy, cos I always thought of you as someone who was always far too sensible for all that nonsense, bowing to peer pressure, etc.A concern for me is that as vegan parents we do have to try extra hard to make sure that our behaviour is beyond reproach, because there is so much prejudice against us already just for being vegan and we don't need the anti-vegans getting ideas that we are a bunch of irresponsible pot-smoking hippy types, who are living in a 1960's time warp. Very much easier for them to discredit us if they can accuse of being not so clear-headed as "normal" people.I am very worried about the public perception of vegan families, because like it or not some people like to lump us all together.Social services harrassment has recently forced one vegan mum and child from near London, off out of the country to an eco-village in France. They will probably be very happy, but it's not right they had to flee because of social services disapproval of a healthy, mostly raw food lifestyle, while in fact other parents in her area did all sorts of drugs and were completely left alone by social services! She seems such a clean-living person, it's so unfair. If a vegan of that sort is persecuted, how much worse will it be for those with some bad habits? It sometimes looks like social services don't actually care if parents take drugs or smoke, etc, but if the parents are vegan and do these things, it would be extra ammo for social services to use against them, even if their real concern is the veganism.Lesley> Bye Hannah - my tree comment was a joke btw. I have actually partaken of 'spliff' in the past - but maybe that wasn't me you were referring to. I haven't been involved in the drugs debate here being very uncomfortable in the role of mod.> I, too am sorry to see what this has all deteriorated into,> > Lucy
