The study was conducted to learn more about the attitudes and behavior of African American women aged 25 to 55 toward milk and other milk products. According to the survey, African American women do not always include milk or milk products in their diet. Only 58 percent of those polled claimed they drink or eat milk and milk products. The remaining 42 percent said they either didn't drink or eat them at all or only rarely. 96 percent of African American women claimed they drink two or fewer glasses of milk a day. This is well below the three 8 oz. servings of milk recommended each day for suggested calcium intake. While most African American women believe they are lactose intolerant, of the women polled only 29 percent could define lactose intolerance. The other 71 percent claimed to understand lactose intolerance and its effects ``somewhat or not very well at all.'' While 19 percent of African American women claim to have problems digesting milk and milk products, research found few were actually taking measures to help their bodies solve the problem. Only 7 percent use lactaid milk or dairy products and only 3 percent use milk digestives. The African American women polled were ``very'' or ``somewhat concerned'' about the following diseases: High blood pressure (92 percent) - Heart disease (90 percent) - Osteoporosis (81 percent) Fewer than half of African American women polled drank three glasses of milk each day. Milk and milk products provide an easy way to help lower risk for health problems in the African American community like low bone mass and hypertension. The survey was conducted online with a sample of 508 African American women, all members of the CyberPulse Advisory Panel. The Advisory Panel has been carefully selected to closely match US population demographics. The research was compiled by Impulse Research Corporation on behalf of the Milk Processor Education Program.
