Suggested amalgamation of two British vegan

has about 50 members and Vegan-network about 130 at present,

so it is the busier of the two groups.

They seem quite similar, basically vegan mostly for the

UK, and some of us are on both already.

Vegan-network has several moderators and are happy to work that way,

so it doesn't all fall onto one person's shoulders, so they might

possibly be happy to join with the moderator of to jointly

moderate the two as a new group which could be called Vegan-networkUK

or we could just ask everyone to join Vegan-network and make that

bigger, with one more moderator (Michael from ).

The reason I suggest this is that Vegan-network has been fairly

successful in arranging a few social gatherings in London, and quite

a few people have turned out to be very helpful in arranging my

American vegan friend's stay while he speaks to various groups about

his lawsuit. I feel that the two groups, especially would

probably be stronger by cooperating together for vegan social support

and various vegan-related projects in the UK.

What does everyone think?

Or do our moderators just want to keep things the way they are?

That could be a good idea Lesley - the only problem with implementing changes at the moment is that Hayley is the only one who can do it. She has no internet access just now but can recieve emails - you could mail her about it as she is going to be making changes soon I believe.

I prefer to keep them separate, because I would lose interest if all the chat became too "american". Nothing against those in the U.S. its just that their foodstuffs are often different Places they visit would mean nothing etc.I belong to both but I like to feel that i can talk to people in U.K.---How else am I going to find a MAN!!!!! I have mixed feelings on this...

On the one hand, it's a really good idea, strength in numbers and all

that. However, I am concerned how having such a large group might be

like. I sometimes feel that this group is too big, and lacks the

intimacy and warmness of smaller groups.

Also, if we amalgamated with an American group, would it be

productive? As Angie said, knowing about American vegan products +

restaurants etc is of no use to us here in good ole' Blighty!!

The same could be said for people in America concerning British stuff,

but it would be interesting to hear what's its like being vegan in

America. I'm sure that also, a lot of the issues are common, wherever

u live!!

I think I'd prefer to join the other group too.

What's the plan?

Would I like to lose two small and tasty varieties of apple in

favour of one large, convenient, shiny variety?

and vegan-network each have their own flavour, albeit it

changes with the season and with whoever are the dominant

contributors at the time. Neither list has been exclusive of

membership, or restrictive of subject matter (although vegan-network

has seen fit to expel one member). Nevertheless, they both continue

to reflect their origins; to quote from the list definitions:

: " Discussion of vegan issues and support for vegans.

Primarily affecting intrests and needs of people in the UK. "

vegan-network: " The Young Vegan Network was set up to

provide a means for vegans to meet each other as there

aren't many of us out there! It's mainly aimed at 'younger'

vegans aged 18-35, but we welcome anyone! .... "

Vegan-network is not an explicitly UK list, and it enjoys input from

abroad, yet it has (hitherto) managed to retain its UK character

(which is its appeal for me).

There was a time when it was questionable whether two general

UK-based discussion lists were viable -- but that is now in the

past. Neither needs to be 'saved' by a merger.

A single list, like one giant field of wheat, is very susceptible to

disease or adverse weather. Two fields, although less convenient

for the combine, is better farming practice (and the hedgerows

enriching).
