Guest guest
Is anyone else as puzzled as me at the vegetarian/Hindu complaint against McDonalds? If Hindus really believe that cows are sacred, why are they supporting a company whose profit comes almost entirely from killing cows? The same applies to veggies, if they believe that vegetarianism is anything more than just a diet. As the Plamil soya milk advert says, I try to be a positive vegan which means I support vegan companies and organisations over any others (I also try to support those with sound environmental and social policies). In an age where more people are becoming more and more disillusioned with governments, and multi-national companies are where the real power is held, I see every pound I spend as a vote (probably more effective than the general election coming up in a few weeks in the UK). Even if McDonalds sold a 100% pure vegan burger, I would still never even consider " voting " for them, because of everything else they are involved in. I've also stopped " voting " for Pret a Manger (half owned by McDonalds), and even Cranks (now owned by Nandos chicken restaurant). Lets face it, there are enough struggeling small veggie cafes, and I'd rather help them (went to Edinburgh this weekend, and found that Helios Fountain had shut their excellent little veggie cafe because it wasn't profitable. Luckily Suzies Diner was still ther and as great as ever!). I believe that we need to teach the big powerful companies that vegetarianism (and religion if you're that way inclined) is more than just a brand that they can cynically exploit in order to increase their market share. I'm trying to think if a term to describe this " more than just a diet " vegan: how does " socio-ethical enviro-vegan " sound!? spacevegan " we're all space travellers, our ship is mother earth "
